I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

PSE offers a great work/life balance. I worked with some amazing people. During my time at PSE I learned a great deal. Benefits are good.

    Cons

There is a disconnect between Directors and Managers which trickles down. There are very few good managers in the company. Puppets are promoted into management not leaders. I experienced bullying and sexism from my manager. The company puts out Ethics Videos but does not take the complaints seriously and will do anything not to acknowledge and will only act if there is a legal charge. If you try to find another job within...

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time

    Pros

Many excellent, committed people - made some great friends and had many good experiences. Management always seemed to genuinely care about my wellbeing as a person. Very stable; layoffs were rare in recent years. Good work-life balance, and good benefits. Genuinely interesting and fulfilling work - everyone needs electricity! PSE takes their responsibility to provide critical services very seriously at all levels, and...

    Cons

The utility environment is a bit like working for the government - a large bureaucracy that is slow to change, and some extremely unhelpful employees coast along for years just cashing checks. Major projects must be approved by state regulators, which can add months/years or kill initiatives after much work has been done. Employee development framework and mentorship programs are sorely lacking; it's tough to be a younger...

    Advice to Management

Make a more concerted effort to develop and retain future leaders. There are many (very!) well-paying, dynamic and exciting places to work in the Seattle Metro area who will hire away your next generation of leaders if you don't fully commit to developing, mentoring, and engaging your younger employees.

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Benefits are pretty good, as is the PTO and work life balance. People are nice enough. Tuition reimbursement is great and there are lots of satellite locations.

    Cons

External hires get paid more than existing employees. Promotions don’t exist - you have to apply to get a higher position unless you’re “tapped” to become a Director. Passive aggressiveness is rampant. Recognition award seem to be a way for management to get around promoting people.

    Advice to Management

Pay your existing people what they’re worth. Promote people when they exceed expectations instead of giving them a recognition award!!!

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good work/life balance Really good benefits Not very intense environment Autonomy

    Cons

Upper management is disconnected from employees, especially those in regional offices Lack of diversity, mostly in management Lack of strategy across the organization- Directors don't collaborate, resulting in lack of coordination between departments and challenges for employees Too analytical PSE keeps people around who aren't competent, dragging high achievers down

    Advice to Management

Ensure strategies are well thought out before launching them Connect more with employees at all levels

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time

    Pros

Free muffins and sandwiches at working lunches. Unlimited free coffee bar on every floor of the corporate HQ. Easy to move to another department. Work life balance was great, at HQ, nobody was actually working, just looking like they were busy and figuring out how to backstab each other for that next promotion or raise.

    Cons

Pay is less than literally every other utility in Washington State, despite the cost of living being the highest in the Seattle and Bellevur area. Shady ethics, treat customers horribly, cutting corners to get next quarter's profits up. There was a mass exodus of talented engineers to other utilities (Snohomish PUD, City of Tacoma, Grays Harbor PUD, etc.)

    Advice to Management

    Keep eating caviar.

I have been working at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Dealing with many managers and other employees on a daily basis I can easily say mostly everyone here is great and is willing to help. If you are an accountant but want to move into HR, managers and the company help you to get you there and this actually happens. Work life balance is very reasonable although this is dependent on the group you are in.

    Cons

This is a utility so we don't have breakneck technology like some of the other tech companies. Pay may be slightly under do to this as well.

I worked at Puget Sound Energy full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Most teams have good work/life balance, the organization is accepting of new ideas, everyone is very customer focused, and employees trust the company to do the right thing

    Cons

Poor planning leads to a volatile pace (sometimes teams don't have any real work, while other times, the same teams have to work 12 hour days + weekends to meet timelines). Compensation for FTEs is below market, which makes it difficult to retain talent. End up having to acquire talent by bringing on consultants since the company pays a competitive market rate for vendor contracts.

    Advice to Management

Keep focusing on improving the organization's collective planning competencies. Find ways to compensate talented employees so that they'll chose to grow their careers with PSE. And keep the awesome customer focus!
