I worked at Purchase College part-time

    Pros

Part-time and full-time students can find work with student government. Some paid, most unpaid.
Administrative staff are friendly and willing to teach you on the job.
Open but productive work environment. Staff is team-oriented and tries to be in tune with quickly changing student culture.
Great sunsets, fresh air, and you can always find community members walking their dogs.

    Cons

Bad food but for one place, and it's almost always crowded.
    Fair to low pay
    Not the prettiest campus.

    Advice to Management

Administration is not proactive with school emergencies. Numerous times in the past have had to scramble to solve something--poorly, mind you--that could have been avoided.

I worked at Purchase College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Diverse student body in terms of class and race and that brings much to the voices represented in an artistic field.

    Cons

Unfortunate tenured heads of area is neither informed nor vested in communicating constructive information to faculty nor students, even with a fantastic new chair of department, the atmosphere of department is still difficult to become one that is supportive and beneficial to students.

I worked at Purchase College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Unionized; fixed increases in pay when union is contract with the state.
    - Great retirement options and affordable, comprehensive benefits
    - Generous vacation/sick day accrual rates

    Cons

    - For some positions, especially entry level and mid-level positions in residence life/community engagement, there is a five-year term limit for employees in those jobs. If the employee does not have a position on/after the last day of the employee's fifth year of your employment within the same position, then the employee is let go. The employee receives what is known as a "year and 45", which refers to a notice of the employee being "let go" within one year and forty-five days of the employee's eventual "release" from the institution within that position. The five year limit does not apply if it is either not specified in the employee's contract, negotiated between the manager and HR, or necessarily if the employee takes on a new position at the college. If the employee takes on a new position that has a five-year limit, then the five-year mark begins on the first day of the new position.

-There is a lot of stalemated bureaucracy (as with in any institution). This is true throughout the institution, no matter the division. Most of the upper administration has been at Purchase for a while. In fact, quite a few of them graduated from Purchase for their bachelor's and master's. With regards to upper administration and qualifications (on the non-academic side), there is not much regard for those. In the upper administration it is more based on how much the person is ingrained at the institution rather than what the candidate's pertinent experiences, education background, or other experience may be. This can create quite a challenging situation for a new professional, faculty member, etc. who is not familiar with the institution.

    Advice to Management

If the school's catch phrase is really, "Think Wide Open", then hire "wide open". The nepotism in Purchase's hiring practices does not benefit the student experience. On the contrary, it actually brings into question the value of the out-of-class experiences provided to students.

I worked at Purchase College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Strong student body. Especially the PSGA. Students have more of a say than the faculty/staff do under the current leadership. Students advocate for themselves really well.

    Unionized employer.

    Cons

Administrators in upper level management are nothing but elderly Caucasian men. More diversity is needed in the upper level administration. Note, don't rub anyone the wrong way or they'll act as if you don't exist.

I worked at Purchase College (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As a student worker, the bosses were very flexible when it came to allowing time off for midterms and finals.

    Cons

Budgeting reasons limited the amount of hours students were permitted to work each week. Other than that, it was a great work experience.

I worked at Purchase College part-time

    Pros

Very flexible position in terms of hours. Easy job to master over a period of time. Fun interesting environment. Cool experience to talk to alum and students. Great position for any student looking to make some money while taking a full course load!

    Cons

Not a high paying job. Can be monotonous. Can have angry parents or students or alum that you come in contact with.

    Advice to Management

I have no advice to management I think that they did the best that they could and the job was easy and sometimes even fun.
