      StarStarStarStarStar
Former Employee - Postdoctoral Research Associate

I worked at Purdue University for more than a year

        Pros

Nice town, nice campus amenities, miss the bubble tea a lot, parking was a breeze. Pay was a bit low, but well in excess of cost of living in the area.

        Cons

My boss was a psychopath. Also, there is no postdoc office, the postdoc club was a non-existent running joke in several departments, there was an attitude of indentured servitude (not uncommon for postdocs in general, but here it was definitely rampant), and very little in the way of educational/mentoring support for postdocs.

        Doesn't Recommend

I have been working at Purdue University full-time for more than a year

        Pros

Purdue offers a significant amount of vacation time for postdoctoral associates. My particular job offered a significant amount of flexibility and independence in research. This will vary with advisors.

        Cons

Administration can be difficult to work with. The West Lafayette area is not a particularly exciting area to live and work.

        Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Purdue University full-time for more than a year

        Pros

State of the art faculty. State of the art equipment (ex. Bruker 800 MHz TXI probe NMR) the best support staff I've ever seen, NMR, Mass Spec, and AMY Facility. Many professor in the National Academy of Sciences, one Nobel Laureate.

        Cons

Some of the labs are antiquated depending on the Professor. Once a month paycheck.

        Advice to Management

Your job gets tougher and tougher each year, hang in there!

I have been working at Purdue University full-time for more than 3 years

          Pros

Advisor gave you much of freedom in doing your research. There are lots of advanced experimental facilities around the compus. The collaboration among different labs are very frequent.

          Cons

It's located in a small town, and there is not so much fun, especialy during the weekend and vacation time! It's almost an empty campus when there is no student here.

I have been working at Purdue University full-time for more than a year

          Pros

Purdue University is a great place to do your post-doctoral training. There are various opportunities for collaboration with different departments. Of course a lot depends on your direct supervisor.

          Cons

Its a small college town which means there aren't many venues for recreation outside of the university clubs and activities. Not having an airport makes it a hassle to travel sometimes.
