I have been working at QBE full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are great. Schedule is flexible.

    Cons

Watching top 50 employees and others I respect walk out the door is a red flag to me. I've seen four people leave who I respect in the last month. Another round of layoffs does not add to my confidence in job security.

    Advice to Management

Decide on a plan and follow through. Communicate more clearly. I don't want to go down with a sinking ship and I am sure I speak for everyone on that matter.

I worked at QBE full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The salary and benefits were okay.

    Cons

The company outsources jobs. You can not be sure to have a long term job in Sun Prairie because of jobs being outsourced. Constant change in management in the last 5 years.

    Advice to Management

Employees deserve more respect and instead of outsourcing work with employees to reduce costs. You can use salary freezes, reduce benefits like 401k match. Most people would bypass an increase if it meant they would keep their job. Maybe if you quit hiring so many VP's and managers you could have more money to pay employees instead of outsourcing. When you do outsource make sure due diligence is done and you actually know how much information and processes a department does before you sign a contract.

    Pros

I had a good salary and an impressive title, with a global company with strong financials, at least outside of the US.

    Cons

Culture of tattletaling, back-biting, secretive manipulation, poor communication. Opaque, badly documented Excel models. Company was losing tons of money domestically and stopped all business travel. A truly unpleasant place to work.

    Advice to Management

Improve communication, get more conference room space in the NYC office, stop the culture of tattletaling among employees.

    Pros

When I started working for QBE, they offered decent benefits (for example, contributing to HSAs for employees who opt for HDHPs), matched 401(k), and their wellness plan was fairly luxurious (gym membership reimbursements, rewards cards for individuals who had wellness exams and took health courses). They also had a competitive performance awards program.

However, nearly all of these benefits were cut about two years into my tenure with the company. I'm not aware that they've been able to afford to add these benefits back into their employment package.

    Cons

QBE North America has not had an easy run the past few years, and in the chaotic aftermath of poor publicity they've tried to stress how open and honest they're being (now). If I heard the word "transparency" once during meetings and training, I heard it literally hundreds of times. But I never felt that any executive beyond my own manager was even remotely transparent.

I worked for the company when they hired Dave Duclos to come in and clean up - extraneous spending was cut, as were extraneous workers, offices were shut down, travel was limited - basically all the actions you expect when a company is struggling. We endured round after round of layoffs. Many of the decisions were understandable, even justifiable, but they ultimately reached a point where people began to feel like they were on the Titanic. There was so much criticism coming at QBE and its managers that they didn't even care who was working for them; they were too busy trying to write semi-positive press releases and find a buyer for their lender placed mortgage department. Employee appreciation became a laughable term. When that happened, the good workers left, and the dishonest, passive aggressive workers stayed and sunk their fingernails into management positions.

    Advice to Management

QBE North America needs to be scrubbed with a heavy-duty brush and then set out to dry - it's insane (literally) to keep throwing the same kinds of people at the problem and expect a different outcome.
