I have been working at QSSI full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good location, Columbia, MD
Hard working and smart team members

    Cons

Company culture and morale is terrible
PM/Managers are so insecure (capability and skills issues) that they do micro management and bad command and control

    Advice to Management

Promote individuals to managers based on their skills and the value they bring and not because of your personal relationship/interests/motives. Good employees quit because of bad managers. I remember one experience where an extremely poor individual (very horrible at their job and very mean with team members) was promoted to manager (due to their relationship with the VP) despite a project-wide outcry against their promotion. Would advice management to keep their project/company interest ahead of their personal kickback.

I have been working at QSSI (More than a year)

    Pros

    Few Great Managers.
    Great Flexibility.
Management has finally woken up from dormant state after Optum took over.

    Cons

Lot of Internal Recruiting of family members e.g., wife, brother etc.
Ratio of talented workers vs people who drag the company through dirt is low.

    Advice to Management

    Cut the nepotism.

I have been working at QSSI (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Bagels on Friday, good balance working on and off site.

    Cons

Bad purchase by Optum to get foot into Federal market, running Columbia operation out of MN, no significant new business, no idea how to run Federal business. All major projects ending within next year and now being large business with all kinds of conflicts of interest ( being owned my healthcare company) prospects of winning rebids are slim. Not competitive with other large companies slowly and painfully putting QSSI out of business. QSSI management EXTREMELY weak, no leadership, unfriendly and uncaring. Working too hard to please Optum's bottom line, layoffs every year, no job security long term. Optum Sr mgmt does poor job with communication of stability and initiatives. Right hand does not know what left hand is doing, employees don't know what is going on. Most employees don't know their Optum counterparts, or even others within QSSI outside of their small department. QSSI used to be a dynamic, fun, busy and agile company to work for, now it takes a "committee" to make a simple decision, nothing productive or innovative gets done. Salaries are competitive for select jobs but short lived. Benefits are really bad, healthcare is very costly and too limited. Another CEO after constant restructure (org charts still non-existent) may be too little too late, following UHG "boys club" mentality.

    Advice to Management

Bring in significant business. Hire people who know what they are doing. Get out of Optum and start over as small business doing what we know how to do.
