"Good, growing company, but new CIO is quickly dragging down IT - morale is suffering"

I have been working at Qlik full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice colleagues; very collegial IT group worldwide; less politicking than at other companies; really good benefits, including annual "244U" day to study and another annual day to volunteer; very flexible work arrangements, good work/life balance, CEO who strongly appears to care about employees

    Cons

IT has gone from bad to worse under new CIO who started in Dec 2016. Has absolutely no leadership skills. Not spending any time communicating with the organization or even fairly senior managers. Only seems to be interested in Agile and outsourcing. Morale is plummeting, and IT is likely to start losing more good people (a trend that started with the previous CIO, who lasted 20 months). This CIO seems more interested in recruiting friends than recognizing talent based on actual skills. As a result, no one sees any career paths.

    Advice to Management

Replace the CIO with someone who can lead, communicate, and set strategic goals and objectives based on the business vision. This view is widely shared throughout Qlik IT right now, sorry to say.

I worked at Qlik full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    The product.
There was a legitimate opportunity for advancement and becoming a great company - before the IPO. The past 5-6 years left some deep scars.
The "Kool Aid" served at the Summits didn't leave the normal brainwashing after-taste.

    Cons

If you want "Director" on your resume, come to Qlik. More Directors than quota carriers... Hmm wonder what went wrong? Oh, that's right - hubris. The management team was not able to admit mistakes, nor take the appropriate actions to course correct. So, for Go to Market mistakes (a lot of them), they discounted or SPIF'd their way to the number. For the other areas, like a petulant child, keep your head down and don't even think about learning from the past.

    Advice to Management

Doesn't matter.. They gave themselves golden parachutes, lined with diamonds. For the next layer down, most of the ones who created the chaos, they moved on at the end of '15 and Q1/Q2. None of them listened anyway. For those that remain, hang in there. The product is valid and the company should be able to survive.

    Pros

Great culture. Very relaxed pace and great for self motivated people. Lots of flexibility.

    Cons

Doesn't seem to have a clear direction for company. Poor expense management. likely led to buyout. Who knows how things will change once the private equity firm officially takes over. Not much in terms of career advancement opportunities.

    Pros

This company does a great job of sharing the Sweedish culture and even send you to Sweeden so you can learn the culture.

    Cons

This company is headquartered in Sweeden and Radnor Pennsylvania--it is out of touch with the Silicon Valley. The product is great, but the Executive strategy is lacking.

    Advice to Management

Move headquarters to Silicon Valley and be more strategic with your partnerships.

    Pros

Good customer base. Market leading tech, although some confusion as they make the bold transition to multi product strategy. Fair pay. Some very bright colleagues.

    Cons

Swedish culture is sometimes too slow to react and infect the company with an overly European vibe. They denied Tableau as a competitor for years. Go to market in US Sales was a train wreck until new leadership came in.

    Advice to Management

Take no prisoners. Moment in time is now. Keep innovating in product and aggressively expand the sales force while cutting the fat in other departments.

    Pros

Company still has a very good business intelligence offering in QlikView, however Qlik Sense lack a large number of basic capabilities found in original product.

    Cons

Company refuses to accept the reality of market pressures and soon will start loosing market share to it major competitor.

    Advice to Management

Start looking at what's lacking in future product before it is too late.

I have been working at Qlik full-time

    Pros

The brand-new new product, Qlik Sense, is one of the top if not the best data analysis product out there. R&D has done a phenomenal job in creating something beautiful, easy to use, and useful. Qlik should be proud of what it has accomplished - re-revolutionize the BI industry once again. The challenge is still around increasing market awareness. Qlik has been around for 20 years but Tableau has recently taken the lead in awareness. Qlik is well-positioned to take that back with proper marketing and customer nurturing.

Tons of career opportunities if you know how to network across the company. People change roles frequently and it's not discouraged.

    Cons

The company has grown so fast (head count doubles every few years) in so many locations (Philadelphia, San Francisco, Raleigh, London, Sweden, Singapore, etc) that it's gotten very difficult to keep track of who's doing what and has resulted in duplication of effort or lack of alignment. These challenges can certainly be overcome but be aware of what type of environment YOU thrive in. Some people love the far-flung international culture, others don't fit.

    Advice to Management

CEO and most of the C-level execs are wonderful people, approachable and down to earth. A not-insignificant amount of politics one or two levels down. C-level execs need to make sure *everyone* live the company values, and possibly penalize performers who succeed by going around the values.
