I have been working at Quad/Graphics (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are some good opportunities for those in the right positions, which are few
There are a lot of good people left in this company

    Cons

The entire company is attempting to change 45 years of habit, sales structure, product offering, etc. over night.

Executive leadership does not know how to limit or prioritize major initiatives for the company so everyone attempts to do everything at once. This causes a ton of stress on the employees - more work, same or less pay and higher expectations.

Resources are the first thing to go to reduce costs after a bad quarter

    Advice to Management

Time to change out some of the old guard and bring in more help. You can't continue to put more and more on the employees who have poured blood, sweat and tears into this company over the last 10 years without rewarding them. Develop a corporate strategy and provide focus and priority through the ranks - get everyone swimming in the same direction.

Hours working overnight. Reduced crews on machine.

    Advice to Management

Remember what it was like when you were on the floor and stop bringing in management from acquired companies and Wisconsin.

    Pros

Nice people who are really happy with the company. Good work life balance. Excellent career development opportunities. Great accessibility of upper management.

    Cons

People spend a lot of time talking about the good old days which makes people working there now feel negatively about current executive leadership.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job at incorporating new acquisitions into corporate culture

I have been working at Quad/Graphics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Strong values, employees that care about their jobs as well as their coworkers. Anybody is willing to help get the job done, from the production floor to the glass offices.

    Cons

With so much disruption in the printing industry, the pressure to continue to win new business and be the low-cost provider is immense.

    Advice to Management

Continue to show transparency with employees to eliminate fear of the unknown in this industry and how it affects the company.

    I worked at Quad/Graphics full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Lost a lot of weight.

    Cons

Extremely little training. Superiors had time to yell at you but no time to explain how to do it right. Literally a sweat shop; no air conditioning. Often 120 to 130 inside even at night. Had to bust it at top speed (although I was one of the fastest feeders in the newspaper industry) for twelve hours with two twenty minute breaks. Only job in 25 years of work experience that was truly negative.

    Advice to Management

Train employees. Run machines at a reasonable fast pace instead of running employees into the ground, that will also cut down on injuries.

    Cons

Had to be available for work related calls 24/7; print businesses is struggling; a lot of lifers work there

    Advice to Management

I worked at Quad/Graphics (More than 5 years)

    Pros

decent health benefits,12 hour shifts meant 3 and 4 days off per week or chance for overtime while still having a couple days off.very safety oriented

    Cons

low pay in most starting positions, took away bonuses, profit sharing, holiday parties and increased health benefit costs.

    Advice to Management

Be more honest with employees. You can't keep taking things away from employees with only giving less than cost of living pay increases if any at all and then try to spin it that you're doing them a favor somehow.I think it's a little insulting.

I have been working at Quad/Graphics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people - depending on the location you work at - very friendly, family-oriented people (NOT UPPER MANAGEMENT). The teams plan a lot of events to bring people together and get to know each other.

Fitness center on site (although it is not staffed or well maintained). Day care on site (very expensive, but convenient).

    Cons

The benefits - no 401K matching, little to no raises, no uniform reimbursement, no tuition reimbursement, increased insurance premiums. All of these were eliminated or changed in the last year. Little cohesion between Quad employees and the employees of companies acquired by Quad (lots of animosity). Very high turnover rate. They expect you to work LOTS of hours, whether you are salaried or hourly, production or admin - under the guise that "we're all part of the team, and we have to do this to succeed".

    Advice to Management

Don't dumb this company down to "be on par with other printers". We didn't take jobs at "other printers", we took jobs at Quad. Young, talented employees aren't going to stay at Quad if you continue to cut benefits to be like everyone else. That's not the company Harry Quadracci built - and you're NOT on par with other Milwaukee-area companies.
