I worked at Queensboro Shirt Company full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-not unemployed and you get a pay check -the occasional free food (Which is used more as a band-aid/distraction from real issues. Low moral because no one gets raises? Here, have a waffle. Have to work on a holiday or through a hurricane? Here, have some cold, soggy pizza.)

    Cons

    1. UPPER MANAGEMENT/CEO: They disguise themselves as caring sympathizers who always want to do the right thing, but once you get to know them, you find that they are all entitled, selfish "business men" who could not care less about the staff. They go on and on about their fancy cars, houses and vacations, and have no real understanding of their staff who are struggling just to make ends meet and feed their children. They sit in their meetings, one after another, and talk, and talk, and talk. That's all they do is talk, mostly about "greatness" and how awesome things are, and how great it is to be a part of this company "family." They have their meetings just to hear themselves talk, or to talk about what they want to talk about in the next meeting - but the talking is just that, talk. Just hot air. Nothing ever gets done. Just another way for them to look "busy." 2. COMPENSATION: There is none. No raises. No keeping wages consistent with inflation or cost of living. Do not work here unless you would also love to pick up two other jobs just to pay rent. It's ridiculous. 3. HORRIBLE WORK CONDITIONS: Some people like to say "the building just needs some love" - but the building actually needs to be knocked down and completely rebuilt. The floors are dirty, cracked concrete, the walls are crumbling cinder blocks and brick, the roof is completely caving in and leaks every single time it rains (which causes puddles, flooding, and yes - mold), the water filters never get changed in the drinking fountains, the AC always breaks or is stuck on high (so prepare to sweat or freeze, you never really know, each day changes), the glass windows are always getting shot out (rocks or bullets), the bathrooms never work because there is a severe plumbing issue that the CEO refuses to fix, and be prepared to see cockroaches, spiders, mice, rats, birds, bats and every other pest while working there. The place is seriously worse than a landfill. 4. (MIS)MANAGEMENT OF FUNDS: I have never seen a company more mismanaged in my life. The CEO is completely losing his grip on reality and listens to no one. He does whatever he wants, often on a whim, and there are no checks and balances for his decisions. He listens to no one. His staff constantly warns of misappropriation, but he insists on spending money when he shouldn't, and cutting corners where he should be investing. He often insists that everyone be salary, so he can make staff work overtime without costing him a penny. He constantly brags about the millions in sales, but conveniently leaves off the part about the amount of debt (which grows each quarter). When others hear him talk about profit, they often ask for raises, but then there's all of a sudden "no money" in the budget. But of course, there's always money for ping pong tables, vending machines, espresso machines, waffle makers, freebies for all his friends, luncheons once a month, cookouts once a year, and free shirts for everyone at each "team building" event. The guy is seriously delusional. He is running the entire company into the ground because he is no longer capable of making good decisions. For it being a 30+ year company, they are making terrible mistakes that not even a start-up company would make. I've seen lemonade stands that run more efficiently.

I worked at Queensboro Shirt Company full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Most co-workers are good people. Ping pong.

    Cons

This company boasts publicly a great culture but in reality it's a culture of fear. Everyone (and I mean everyone) fears losing their job at the whim of the scattered owner's "4P" approach to leadership (he doesn't possess them but will fire for not having them) and one other person. These two dictate every decision. A second person has hands in everything and is exceptionally unqualified to do so but has the owner's ear enough to make them "qualified." For me, it was like having to go on a nature hike listening to a park ranger tell all these personal stories you never wanted to hear and all you wanted to know was will the plant you just touched give you a rash. That's what management is - all talk and no substance. It's a shame, really. Many people there are good, qualified people who'll never be heard with their good ideas for fear of being fired. And if they do speak up and provide a good idea, credit is stolen (always a few tweaks to make it different enough not to reward you with it) and any hope for advancement is taken away. They do occasionally advance from within, but it is highly political. You must befriend that one person or you're stuck where you are or out the door. And of course there's the bullet holes in the windows every other month... So, just to sum up, the environment is toxic for anyone with any belief that performance outweighs ingratiation.

I have been working at Queensboro Shirt Company full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The first time I walked in to the building, I knew I wanted to be here. I prepared for the interview more than I ever had before and I really have not stopped preparing in the two years since. The work challenges you to be better and the rewards reach beyond the office walls. Hard work is rewarded hard. Open door policy with management is not just talk. Camaraderie between all departments is a priority!

    Cons

It is a BIG undertaking, but the building could use more love. The snack table is too close to my desk.

I have been working at Queensboro Shirt Company

    Pros

Flexible. Challenging. Customer and employee focused. Setting goals for all the right reasons, not just pushing for profit. A building full of thoughtful and hard working individuals. Lots of different characters there with no shortage of diversity. Definitely not a "boys club." In fact, 7 out of the 15 team leaders are female. This is not a place for negativity. Management is fair and transparent. Have never experienced a more open and collaborative workplace.

    Cons

As some have said, the building could use some work. That said, they have great strides in this regard and continue to improve each year.

I have been working at Queensboro Shirt Company

    Pros

Queensboro is one of the only jobs I've ever had where I don't dread going to work in the morning. In fact, I'm often excited to see what the next day will bring. The camaraderie between employees is fantastic, and no matter what department you're hired into, you will quickly sprout friendships in all other departments as well. The customer service team is top notch, and dealing with escalated customers is minimal due to a well-oiled machine of dedication they provide. Most people that are promoted to other departments from within will start there, and it's not a bad position to start in. The CEO and Management are extremely helpful and positive. They offer constant check-ins and are honest with you about your work. This company is all about striving for improvement, and the team leaders absolutely help you to tune your craft. Very few places I've been employed by have such an "open-door" policy and really want you listen to your issues or suggestions like this place does. The Communication within and between departments is excellent. The starting pay is decent, but advancement happens regularly, and managers are always open to talking about pay increases. The benefits aren't bad, and you get plenty of paid vacation (based on your longevity with the company), and plenty of paid Holidays. There are several other perks to working here as well. Queensboro puts together monthly luncheons catered by delicious restaurants from Wilmington (offering vegetarian options too!), and there are weekly round-table luncheons where several employees from different departments get to know one another. Employees are encouraged to take breaks, and there are two ping-pong tables, an inside basketball goal, a small gym, and a quiet room complete with bean-bags, a Bluray player, and video game systems. During half the year, Fred even rents out a local gym to get employees together for basketball games! It's also relatively close to restaurants and Greenfield Park if you're looking for a quick lunch or a walk.

    Cons

The building could use a little work, sometimes there are creaks and leaks. It's not the best part of town, but definitely not the worst. It can sometimes be a little hard to find some privacy on breaks, unless you leave the building. All of the departments can get a little hectic during holiday and busy seasons.

    Pros

Queensboro is a company that is always striving to get better and they are 100% customer service focused. It is an extremely encouraging environment where hard work is appreciated as much as your feedback! A great place to work. Employee events make it really fun too!

    Cons

The Building could use some updates
