I worked at Quest Software full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good work/life balance, easy to get time off if you need it. There are some good people there, made a lot of friends.

    Cons

Raises are very low and inconsistent. Management is not always clear with direction the company is headed, and changing their minds and doing a 180 a few months later.

    Advice to Management

Clearly identify the direction you are headed, give details, and explain why, not just a broad overview like 'were going cloud! everyone get on board!'

I worked at Quest Software full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There really were some great, talented people working at the company before the Dell acquisition and while we operating as part of Dell Software Group. The products were a bit stale, but there was line of sight to revamping quite a bit of the portfolio which was promising.

    Cons

As soon as private equity purchased Dell Software and broke out Quest as a separate company, it went down the drain quickly. They ultimately lied to all employees around what the strategy while the true game plan was to fully take advantage of us all. I guess it was all part of their playbook, but it was dirty. Totally understand you want to make money and there were changes that needed to happen, but for God's sake...man up and be honest about what's expected to happen instead of losing trust of everyone involved. Might as well tell the rest of the surviving employees the truth that their days are limited until they get replaced by another one of your old Attachmate cronies or some young (cheap) blood that doesn't know any better. The surviving Quest employees that I still talk to are all miserable and looking for other jobs.

    Advice to Management

Realize this isn't Attachmate. Trying to run the same playbook is bound to fail for you unless you realize the differences and learn to treat people with respect and dignity. Grow a backbone and learn to shoot straight. To the CEO...your leadership skills stink. And for his directs that now 'run' the company, I dare say none of your employees have any trust in your or your abilities to lead the company anywhere but downhill. The old management that you fired and replaced could run circles around you.

I worked at Quest Software (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice area, the neighborhood is all tech companies
Sometimes the senior managers will come to the office and have a talk
The company encourages people to innovate and apply for patents

    Cons

Sometimes too chill to be productive, and the colleagues are mostly older than 40, which makes young people hard to fit in

    Pros

Great people, great energy. Although I was employed there during the Dell Software acquisition, Quest is in a rebuilding stage now as it returns to its roots. Exciting!

    Cons

No cons really. Steady and consistent work hours. Pay is commensurate with experience and at entry level but room for growth and promotion.

    Pros

You will meet ex Questies who say it was the best place ever to work. And it was, If you were a friend or relative of the Chairman or the CEO of Quest or had worked for Peregrine. Same if you were close to someone who was close to them. If not it was just another place to work.

Sales reps in USA , especially Aliso Viejo, had a special privilege to complain directly to the CEO about deal comp, and they usually were rewarded. Lots of times multiple reps were paid for one rep's work. Which was a big reason the company struggled to make $$ at the end.

    Cons

Quest's dirty secret was that the company couldn't develop products or people. They had to acquire products because R&D was ineffective - and expensive. And they couldn't develop people internally because HR hired, fired and did nothing in between - so they had to hire any needed skills from the outside. When the acquisitions & hiring stopped, the company stagnated and was ripe for takeover.

The first year in Dell really was Better Together, then Dell tried too hard to integrate software marketing & sales "motions" with the hardware teams, so costs increased and bookings dropped badly. Not sure why the DSG president didn't fight back to run the business as a proper software company (bonus money?) but he didn't and evidently none of his sycophantic leadership team told him the King had no clothes. End result = company goes into a tailspin while leadership team has love-in, then DSG sold for 50 cents on the dollar in 2016 and loads of employees got laid off.

    Advice to Management

DSG leadership team - you did NOT do a good job, no matter what you tell yourselves. You (mis)managed numbers, not a business. And you killed that business. Working at DSG was like watching a really awful movie getting made - but leadership acted like you were making Gone With The Wind. In fact it was more like Ishtar. With no script! Hang your heads in shame.

    Pros

The campus is nice, good selection of drinks, fresh fruit, etc.

    Cons

Culture does not support pay for performance. Speaking for the finance department- although there are plenty of women working in the group, they are not treated the same as men in terms of pay, promotion, and social respect.
