I worked at Quest Software full-time

    Pros

Supportive of working remotely or from home when needed. There are some interesting projects as the company tries to reinvent itself.

    Cons

Driven by finance, lots of offshoring. There are many products that way behind the industry

As we continue the process of divesting from Dell and creating the new Quest Software, feedback helps. I don't see the evidence of offshoring that you refer to but I definitely see the investments... More

I have been working at Quest Software full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are a few good people left. Most stay because of dedication to the team/product/customers.

    Cons

    - Very few of those good people left would every hire on to this company.
    - Marketing of products is stuck in 1984
    - people are considered a cost, not an asset.
    - zero growth opportunity for people. with every team short handed, you check out any time you like, but you can never leave.
    - the only communication ever received from the "leaders" is about layoffs
    - too many products doing the same things but instead of consolidating and reallocating resources, they keep trying to plod along and keep all of R&D projects below maintenance levels. even if they do manage to close down a project, those involved are now seen as "failures" so tossed out the door instead of trying to grow them on a short handed project (which is every project)
    - "leaders" are micro-managers and have zero idea how to delegate.
    - the company is simply not going to invest in trying to grow the company. They're simply trying to get the books straight (thanks a lot Dell) and get some kind of oraginzational structure to be able to sell what's left to the next sucker.

    Advice to Management

The company is dying. If you want it to survive, then consolidate the portfolio, invest in people, and tell the world what you're doing.

You've also created a culture where people can start a job out of college, learn exactly how a dysfunctional company works, get a couple of years under their belt and leave.

Look at your own employment stats - how many senior people leave and how many junior people stay. That will say a lot about the culture you've created.

Many of us were looking forward to leaving Dell and getting back to being a software company. Instead, we just became a smaller and poorer performing version of DSG.

I worked at Quest Software full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The team I worked with was amazing. Every single person was talented and skilled at their area of expertise, and together we managed to do great things under a large amount of pressure. They had a very personal approach to interviewing and the job in general. Lots of lunch outings together as a team, that kind of thing. The benefits they offered me were better than what I had previously.

    Cons

As mentioned in the title, there's 0 job security. Shortly after I joined the team it became clear Dell was selling Quest, and no one had indicated or disclosed that during the interview process. There was a lot of unknown up in the air, and a lot of people looking for other positions due to the uncertainty. There have been multiple rounds of layoffs, and direct management has no say in who gets laid off. As someone else mentioned, you can be absolutely killing it at your position and still be laid off. Full disclosure, I was recently laid off. My boss told me he had no say in the matter and was surprised I was on the list, that was given to him, not decided by him.

    Advice to Management

The constant uncertainty in the air is causing a horrible morale to form among employees. If you don't do something soon, you're going to see a lot of long term employees leaving for other positions.
