I worked at Questar Assessment full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There were some great people at this company. Were is the main word, most have left. Good career opportunities and experience if you're willing to deal with all the problems. I honestly learned way more than I thought I would, enough to move on to a much better job, so that's a big bonus to me. Pay was competitive with market rates, but after factoring in hours I was making about half as much as I would have working somewhere else.

    Cons

There has been no visible effort to actually appreciate employees or retain staff. New work is barely getting done, most deliverables are late. Turnover and poor documentation has resulted in lots of people in positions they are not qualified for. Senior management seems clueless about what's actually going on while the most junior people do 3 times more work than they should have to because of management's poor planning. Miscommunication is so bad between departments that the company is basically a satire.

I worked at Questar Assessment full-time

    Pros

Solid Operations department with very hard working, honest people. Departments work hard to drive successful projects.

    Cons

Leadership clashes which leads to downstream impac to the teams. Inconsistency with unreasonable delivery dates, miscommunication between department team, and constant playing favorites. No work life balance and promoting of inexperienced staff to leader roles instead of actually skilled employees who could do the work. Too much favoritism for certain employees.

I worked at Questar Assessment full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Interesting, complex, and challenging industry. Diverse technology stack. Descent benefits. Good physical working environment. Passionate workforce. The desire to improve work-life balance seems culturally important, but they aren't there yet . . . and may not be for a while.

    Cons

Little to no process. Expectations on working hours too high - expect to work 60 hours a week just to keep up - depending on your position and department. Little to no documentation. Poor to non-existent on-boarding process. Good high-level training, but nothing detailed enough to actually help you in your job.

I have been working at Questar Assessment full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Dedicated individual contributors with the potential to have meaningful, long term impact in the educational assessment landscape.

    Cons

Lack of vision within functional departments; emphasis on short term budget and revenue; strategic vision for long term market success is lacking.

I have been working at Questar Assessment full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Individual Contributors are incredible individuals! They are so great that they will give everything they have until the company burns them out (especially in the technology department).

    Cons

They say they "Appreciate You", yet they don't allow you to attend all company meetings. They say they "want to hear your ideas", but then when you have something to present, they don't listen or give you the time of day. This company will take as much as they can get from you, and then once you burn out, they show you the door. Questar has a decently sized HR department, but they rarely care enough about their employees to make big changes.

I worked at Questar Assessment full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The people are great and work very hard. Benefits are pretty standard for the industry. Company has regular events which are a lot of fun. Pay is about 10% above standard pay grade, but there’s a reason.

    Cons

Work life balance is very bad. Lots of long hours during the school year and during ramp up times to when testing starts, and also during testing periods if there are problems, which of course there always are. People work 60,70,80, even 90 hours in a week during these times. The only downtime so to speak is in the summer, otherwise some people sleep in the office on large bean bag like chairs, on a couch, at their desk, wherever they can lay their head for a few minutes while trying to put out the latest fire. Fires sadly are more the norm than the exception, and it lasts for several weeks at a time. For obvious reasons there is a lot of turnover. They’ve spent the last year on a hiring frenzy, but as a result most new people are given little to no direction and are just expected to figure it out on their own. In the meantime, the rest of us who have already experienced the constant fires are all burned out and out the door, along with the knowledge and expertise. And if you do leave, it's possible they will run into trouble and still call you for help. I’ve seen a lot of restructuring going on here, and often times people who should not be in management are suddenly in charge. It affects morale and as a result, more people quit for just one more reason. Although the pay here is higher than most places, unless your sole purpose in life is to work all the time and make money, it’s really not worth it.
