I have been working at Quidel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most of their products are best in class; incentive pay is average; company has many support assets and departments; large product portfolio

    Cons

Large product portfolio and territories of responsibility create a feeling of being "stretched too thin"; priorities are inconsistent without always being ranked for importance; merit increases are nonexistent; work/life demands are unbalanced; lofty uncalibrated goals also accompany excessive demand for after hours time consuming reports and tracking; growth products are behind the current technological curve and do not translate well into customer needs or a competitive edge.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people, decrease territory size, redistribute/ divide product focus among representatives

    Pros

Very stable company. Reasonable work expectations and demands.

    Cons

Can be a frustrating place to work. Company is change averse, can be too political...

    Advice to Management

    Embrace change

I have been working at Quidel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good salary, upper management trying to diversify company to make it less dependent on cyclical products. Upper management is trying to communicate/execute vision. Upper management trying to create a good healthy and fun working environment

    Cons

Mid level management does not take ownership of initiatives/projects. It seems (depending on what area you work) upper management/mid level management not interested on feedback from low level personnel. For the most part, mid level management lacks leadership. This makes easy efforts on process improvement take longer that normal.

    Advice to Management

To upper management, enforce your vision all the way down. Some how (it feels) company vision gets lost between middle management and low levels. To middle management. Take more ownership of the initiatives your subordinates have and don't discard ideas just because they did not come from you. Lead your employees by example.

I have been working at Quidel full-time

    Pros

Smart Colleagues, Great Location, Benefits, Vacation & Sick Time.

    Cons

Constant turnover, company values stuck in another decade, untrustworthy upper management, useless human resources department (what they do all day and why they have such a large team while other far more important business units are understaffed is a mystery around the office, but here at Quidel we ignore issues until they blow up in our face :-) Your work/life balance will depend heavily on what department you are in and if you boss has the good graces of someone important.

    Advice to Management

    I worked at Quidel full-time

    Pros

People are friendly and care about producing high quality products for physicians and hospitals. The work is interesting and those who raise their hand to do more are given opportunities to grow.

    Cons

Many of the leaders seem to be retired on the job or doing their own thing. There is a disconnect between what the organization could be and what it is. Lots of potential that is going unrealized.

    Advice to Management

Reconnect and communicate with your employees on a regular basis. It is difficult to be inspired and to innovate when you don't know where the company is going or why you are being asked to do what you do.

I have been working at Quidel full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The people are the best. Great to work with. The diversity of the company is also a plus. This gives many people several avenues of discipline to work in.

    Cons

Once you get past the slow progression of promotions and pay it can be a great place to work for.

    Advice to Management

Develop a better promotion plan in order to retain those employees that work hard.

I worked at Quidel (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Best if you are fresh out of college with a science degree (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Life Sciences, etc.) and want to work in Chemistry Manufacturing, R & D, or QC. This would be a good place to start. It's always busy and you will always have work to do with a fairly decent income.

    Cons

There is no good training system. Poor leadership and management from the lowest level and up to middle management, e.g. Chemistry Lab 3, QC, and R &D and throughout the company. Too much politics, in-fighting between groups and individuals, favoritism, inappropriate behaviors among bosses and employees and co-workers. Management and leaderships don't seem to care about their employees, and it's all about the bottom line. My first year there were total of 11 people left, two got laid off while there were still a lot of work, and 2 were fired.

    Advice to Management

Take care your employees. Train your first line supervisors and managers leadership and management to be fair, respectful, and effective. Do not be too stingy( e.g., 2009, huge profit from that major Flu season in millions, a bonus for a regular employee? $100 from CEO, that was sad) You make more profit and share more with your employees.

I have been working at Quidel full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I started working in R&D 6 months ago and so far the people have been great. Everyone helps each other and is committed to the project. Middle and upper management is very open and friendly and they make you feel like you are important to the team.

    Cons

It's a smaller company than I'm used to so not all the benefits are the same or apply once you are hired. They are still pretty competitive though.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing.

I have been working at Quidel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent training, management strives to diversify your experiences, never a dull moment, great location, publicly traded, not a subsidiary, professional but laid back

    Cons

Traffic / commute if you don't live nearby, not much upward growth, lots of favoritism, can be high pressure from the top down, micro-managing, very difficult to take vacation, overpaid sales and marketing with no accountability for lack of sales

    Advice to Management

Need to address the PTO issue, more career building awareness, promote more inclusiveness
