I worked at QuintilesIMS (More than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of challenging projects to work on.
    Great pay and benefits.
Solid company and is a leader in the Clinical Research industry.
    Can work from home.

    Cons

No matter how well you perform, you could be part of the annual layoffs so beware. Quintiles manages the company like 'Hunger Games'. Someone is going die (be removed).
    Very, very political org.
Open environment so the office is very noisy.

    Advice to Management

Learn to manage your budgets rather than laying off people to make your budget. If you don't value your employees, you will not succeed.
Hire leaders with strong financial and people skills.

I worked at QuintilesIMS as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Interesting work. Financially stable, growing company. Decent work life balance. Contractors are treated well (except for Cons below). Opportunities to learn.

    Cons

No compunction about advertising "contract to hire" when position is not budgeted (discovered after the fact). They will sound sincere, but there is no drive or effort to keep their promise despite positive performance feedback.

    Advice to Management

Get your arrogance in check with respect to the timeliness of hiring talented contractors, who in good faith, come onboard expecting you keep your hiring promise.

I worked at QuintilesIMS (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Big company, large reach, a lot of possible positions to move to.

    Cons

Disfunctional management, especially in IT. No direction. Still trying to do all of the stupid ideas that others tried in the late 90's and long ago abandoned, like employee reviews with forced distribution. My friends who are still there say the best case scenario is to find a "safe place" and hunker down. And then hope the changes that constantly roil through IT don't blow it up.

    Pros

Good work-life balance. Good tools to work with. Good learning environment.

    Cons

Not good if you are a contractor. Often terminated with no prior notice even with an extended contract.

    Advice to Management

Treat people with more respect; give contractors a heads up if they are going to be let go.

    Pros

Honest, smart people, for the most part.

    Cons

A lot of tension between various teams and departments. Way, way too many managers. Hyper sensitive change control, which is understandable but also constricting.

    Advice to Management

Flatten out the structure - remove as many levels of management as possible.

I have been working at QuintilesIMS full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with. Direct manager is awesome. Excellent benefits and concern for employees Work/life balance.

    Cons

Upper-level managers seem unapproachable, seems like an "old boys" club with some managers jockeying for favoritism. Current mood is one of uncertainty. Pay is not on par with similar positions in other companies - leads to a lot of turnover.

    Advice to Management

Try smiling at people and saying hi once in a while :-)
