    Pros

I am reconignized for my accomplishments which is very rare in this day and age.

    Cons

My commute is two hours and my manager would prefer I work in the office rather than from home, but worth it

    Advice to Management

I would say don't change. I find it refreshing that everyone treats each other like people. I have worked in companies where you have to speak with your manager before speaking with someone higher. I also like how senior management treats and speaks to people like they are just another person and not someone who is under them. For example, a month into my job, I finally realized I was speaking with the Senior VP and Controller in the lunchroom every morning. Also, forgetting about people, granted you have all kinds of personalities at a company but people are generally nice.

    Pros

For the mid-West RR Donnelly provided a fair salary and benefits package. The people were really great to work with. Management was always available and very supportive. The hours were good and vacation time was very fair.

    Cons

Not much mention of advancement. It is not that it didn't exist as much as it was not talked about.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your employees more about where they want to go in the company.

    Pros

Plenty of exposure to high level management. Staff is always looking to educate you about their duties and why they are so proud of their work. No endless days by the copy machine. Management actually promotes input from "young minds" as to not fall behind in the market place. Management was very proactive in giving the interns exposure to client meetings and product details. We were treated as valuable assets to the company. I'm sure there are very few billion-dollar companies that have a CEO that takes the time to speak with interns regularly and keep in contact with them after the internship has ended.

    Cons

Other than the use of IBM Lotus Notes, the company is great. It does seem that they are working to replace the system.

    Advice to Management

Upgrade the computer systems and other in-house technologies as soon as it's financially responsible for the company. Many employees are eager to see replacement.

    Pros

Mature and professional work environment with clearly defined responsibilities and roles. Plenty of resources available to get the job done, from the technically competent management to motivated and helpful coworkers. Pay is average, as are benefits. Telecommuting opportunities were available. The print industry is well established and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

    Cons

Work flow is up and down -- slow weeks make for creative application of one's hours, while hard weeks can chew up 60 hours or more. Career can plateau after a while, as upgrading skills is generally not necessary.

    Advice to Management

Keep hiring quality people, and improve communications between the sales/marketing divisions and product implementation to satisfy both internal and external customers.

    Pros

Great corporate culture. People actually interested in helping each other, no vicious back-stabbing politics. Overall competence of almost all employees. Low turnover. One of the best corporate experiences I've had.

    Cons

Somethings overly bureaucratic and slow to change. Takeover by RRD. Having worked at both is it a shame that the unpleasant corporate culture of RRD will destroy Bowne's.

    Advice to Management

The sellout of employees by the senior management to line their own pockets and then to abandon ship is beyond contempt. Oldest public company in the US destroyed for stock options.

    Pros

Very laid back, family oriented environment. There are people who have been there for 30 to 40 years. They recognize when good work has been done and will compensate you for it. RRD takes good care of their people.

    Cons

Poor benefits package. That's pretty much it.

I worked at R.R. Donnelley full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Donnelley offers a wide variety of opportunities to employees once hired. It is a great company to work for.

    Cons

Being such a large company it can be hard to accomplish small tasks. Paperwork seems to be overwhelming at times.
