I worked at RAINN part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Staff is hardworking, passionate, and fun. I looked forward to going into the office to be around colleagues. Family-like environment. Loved leadership's attention to self-care and the risk of secondary trauma- provided lots of supportive resources and protocol to manage the nature of the work.

    Cons

This type of work can cause burnout if you're not diligent about self-care and work/life balance.

I have been working at RAINN part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great place to work. Teaches you team-work and empathy.

    Cons

Management that is above the managers you work with every day. Some of the rules are inconsistent and not taught to you.

I worked at RAINN full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - amazing, compassionate co-workers who are committed to supporting survivors and improving support for survivors - the work can be overwhelming but extremely rewarding

    Cons

-the work can be traumatizing itself and self-care is not structured into the work day at all -the benefits are not great, the pay is not great and they do not offer any supplementary/additional income for your mental health that, for sure, is going to be affected. I've seen other hotlines offer mental health stipends, frequent work from home days, etc. -little room for growth

    Advice to Management

The hotline support specialists are talking to survivors, one-on-one, sometimes for hours at a time, every day talking to people all over the world in the widest range of situations and these experiences make the support specialists so incredibly knowledgeable but management does not take their ideas for RAINN's growth seriously and neither does anyone on the administrative side. MANAGEMENT SHOULD KNOW, the hotline specialists...

    I worked at RAINN full-time

    Pros

This is a great job for working moms, students, and young professionals looking for new skills and extra cash. Also a great place for survivors or loved ones to work. The hotline staffers and volunteers are caring, respectful, and a pleasure to work with. RAINN does really good work for people in need and the world knows it. If you're looking to find 'your people', this could be the place. For the most part, there are...

    Cons

You can like this job, as long as you avoid the unnecessary interpersonal drama of the week (or just get left out as remote staffers can be). Chances are someone burnt out or self-serving will drag you under the bus at some point anyway. Office politics run this hotline as much as upper management does. Cross your fingers and hope you're not the target that week. Ask yourself if you even know most of the leadership's...

    Advice to Management

Try not being so passive aggressive to those 'below' you. Resolving conflict is more than placating certain staff at the expense of being petty towards others. Most times the issue has to do with personality differences and not performance. Try to model the same trauma-informed, culturally-informed communication as management, that the staffers are expected to apply with visitors. Get advice from different experts...

I have been working at RAINN full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I've been working at RAINN full-time for a couple of years now, and I really love working here. It's such a great cause and the people who work here are really passionate about it. One of the highlights from working here is the way they show their appreciation towards both the full-time and part-time staff. Every month we have a birthday celebration where we sign cards for the staff and have desserts or food brought in....

    Cons

Not everyone works at the same time because of the 24 hour nature of this organization, so it's hard to get to know all of the part-time staff.

    I worked at RAINN full-time

    Pros

Hotline room generally has a good vibe with supportive co-workers. Part time work is flexible and you can make your own schedule.

    Cons

There is little investment in training hotline staff on military specific knowledge. It makes addressing hotline visitor concerns difficult. High turnover for full time staff. Leadership for Safe Helpline isn't great but it looks like things might improve as they restructure the organization and remove certain people from leading the SHL hotline. The pay also used to be terrible 38k for a management position but that...

I worked at RAINN for less than a year

    Pros

RAINN is a close-knit company with a true focus on ending the crisis of sexual assault in America and around the world. As an intern, I was fully immersed in the day-to-day goings on at the office, and given the opportunity to write for their newsletter and communicate directly with survivors. It was a wonderful, educational experience that inspired me to pursue my degree in Social Work.

    Cons

The usual burnout that comes with sexual assault prevention work- it is emotionally draining to work on such a serious topic from day to day.

I worked at RAINN full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

RAINN provides support for survivors of sexual assault and abuse. It aims to help those who seek help and provide helpful resources,

    Cons

Behind the screens, the administration of the organization is highly subjective, fickle towards their employees, shows no concern for the well-being of their own employees. It's unfortunate to say that although it provides a huge service to the world, those who are running it need to re-evaluate their own morals, standards, professionalism.

    Advice to Management

Many of your employees are dedicated to what they do for RAINN, yet those who are left in charge tend to work based on their biased rhetoric. There is no clarity as to what goals are desired and even then, there is a lack of support on actually executing the job. Please consider hiring someone in your HR department that doesn't give the same aura Cruella De Vil. Your president needs to actually DO something instead of...

I have been working at RAINN part-time

    Pros

Really rewarding work. Great pay if you can work nights. Great people and sense of community.

    Cons

Huge gaps between admin/management and the staffers. Can be very overwhelming to work there full time. Burnout is common.

    I worked at RAINN full-time

    Pros

I worked full-time on RAINN’s hotline with thoughtful, dedicated people who were passionate about their work. We truly did offer support to survivors and I enjoyed the work of all of my direct co-workers on the hotline.

    Cons

Upper management regularly lies to staff, upholds favoritism and hypocritical standards, and has no idea how stressful the work can be or what the ‘self-care’ they regularly espouse would actually look like. We experienced constant call volume during the Kavanaugh hearings and there was nothing done to offer extra support, and in fact management at that time chose to write people up more regularly for minor infractions...
