I have been working at RAINN part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I love working on the online hotline because of my fellow staffers and the work being done. There are so many passionate and talented individuals working for this very important cause. Although it can be emotionally draining and a lot on top of my other job, especially because we are so short staffed, it is rewarding.

    Cons

I really don't think the management at RAINN or office staff value the online hotline staff which is unfortunate because they are doing the brunt of RAINN's direct service work. The turnover on the hotline has become insane...long time staff are leaving left and right because they feel overworked, unappreciated, and undervalued. The pay is also minimal so it is the kind of thing you do part time on the side or in... addition to many other jobs. I work with the most amazing people so it disappoints me to see so little investment in appreciating all the incredible work being done.

    Advice to Management

I really recommend hiring a few full time staff with benefits and regular pay and supplement them with part time staff to reduce the stress of the turn over. You cannot pay rent here by working full time so it causes people to balance so many commitments and it negatively impacts the morale and the retention. I also think that investing a little more time and energy in making hotline staff feel appreciated and... valued will help.

  2. "Unprofessional"

I worked at RAINN for less than a year

    Pros

Their mission is a great one.

    Cons

I was hired, but never actually started working based on their incompetence and lack of professionalism. I felt like some of the management that I encountered were uneducated and lacked basic interpersonal skills. They did not answer emails, training material problems, plus they sent out the most unprofessional reference request I have ever seen. I was very embarrassed that my professional references had to be... involved and that they knew I was going to work for such an organization. After several events, I just felt like it would end up being a disaster and I did not want to be associated with an organization like that. I feel for the victims that are reaching out for help. If RAINN cannot exhibit basic professionalism, how on earth do they assist victims? I really had hoped my experience would have been better. I have been involved with other crisis counseling organizations that were amazing. They should take some lessons.

    "Management micromanages the hotline room"

    I worked at RAINN part-time

    Pros

All the hotline staffers care about supporting survivors, and everyone is dedicated to helping everyone else out on their chats. My years here meant a lot to me and I was sad to leave.

    Cons

There is massive turnover due entirely to management who focuses on ways to criticize the staff and not ways to improve the hotline room. The criticism is very subjective, not everyone is held to the same standards. I saw management take personal phone calls, run errands, and watch videos on YouTube, and when a hotline staffer takes a minute to check their phone while waiting for the next crisis call, they're... immediately scolded at. The benefits are terrible. You barely accrue vacation or sick leave, and you're guilt-tripped for taking a day off because you're exhausted.

    Advice to Management

APPRECIATE YOUR HOTLINE STAFF. Instead of trying to find something to criticize us for, think about ways to better our high stress shifts. We've given feedback so many times for why we're all leaving. Listen to the feedback you're getting and incorporate that. Ignoring us and just treating us like kids will lead to more turnover which directly affects the services provided by the online hotline.

I worked at RAINN part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible schedule. Helping others. That's about it.

    Cons

Management is straight crap. They have no real management experience. They expect a high turnover rate, which there is, so they treat employees as disposable/replaceable. If you work overnight just know you will be forgotten and not cared for. Management tells you they care about you but they never show it. Management shows A LOT of favoritism. They increase your workload the longer you work there and do not give... you any sort of compensation for it. Expect to be ignored by administrative staff. They make sweeping structural changes in secret and expect staff to adjust in a moments notice.

    Advice to Management

This is a high stress level job. Show how you say you care about employees through action. Stop with the favoritism. Offer some sort of compensation for good work; it doesn't have to be a raise.
