I have been working at RBC full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very warm environment, supportive co-workers, minimal micro-management.

    Cons

Very adverse to risk and change.

    Advice to Management

Management should do a better job at developing employees, instead of promoting status quo.

I have been working at RBC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Company culture is unlike wirehouse culture. Since RBC is an amalgam of smaller boutique shops, and much of senior management is from those boutique shops, the firm feels more like a very large boutique than a regional. It is pretty easy to speak with people further up the chain, and everyone is pretty friendly. Friendly; not simply cordial.

    Cons

The technology is a little challenging, but there are signs of potential improvements. Paid time off policy is terrible, inflexible, limited and makes work/life balance difficult to manage. Not unique to RBC, but way too much time and effort on things like "diversity" and "inclusion", which really don't mean anything to most employees,

    Advice to Management

Don't try to be a wirehouse. There are enough of them. Keep being what you are. But please, look at comparable firms and try to move your paid time off policies to be more in line with other similar firms.

I worked at RBC as an intern

    Pros

Good deal flow and decent amount of responsibility.

    Cons

Brand name isn't as prevalent as BBs so exit opps aren't as good

    Advice to Management

Take more risk and invest more in US IBD. Especially in advisory practice

I worked at RBC as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

I worked in the Capital Markets division of RBC (specifically Wealth Management). If you like fast paced environments and learning new techniques everyday then I would recommend the company.

    Cons

No real opportunity for growth. Although I was offered a full-time position at the end of my contract, I didn't see the potential for growth past the position I was offered.

    Advice to Management

More emphasis on the work/life balance would go a long way throughout the entire organization.

I have been working at RBC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

RBC is on par with other investment banks in terms of deal/modeling experience, upward mobility, pay, work/life balance. Having worked at other banks though, the people here really do make the difference. Maybe it's the Canadian roots, but everyone is friendly and most care about your time. Overall the culture is lively, open and keeps everyone engaged.
Senior bankers care about the junior bankers and consistently hold sessions to hear our concerns and find ways to address them.

    Cons

We are consistently the last bank on the street to adopt new policies like increasing analyst base pay, Saturday / weekend policies, analyst to associate promotion cycles, etc. Also more technical issues than any other bank.

    Advice to Management

Spend more on computers / software, promote analyst to associate promotions to retain talent.
