I worked at REC SILICON as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

People are knowledgeable and problem solvers. They are always willing to provide information.

    Cons

The atmosphere is hectic as systems are old and in need of upgrade. Company is located in Moses Lake, Washington which makes it difficult to hire employees.

    Advice to Management

Spend more money on upgrading infrastructure. Give IT a position in upper management so they can give a status and an input into decisions

I have been working at REC SILICON as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    --Strong culture of workplace safety
--Supportive managers and staff who value employee opinions
--Industry leader in polysilicon manufacturing processes
--Commitment to training and developing current staff
--When market conditions demand workforce reductions, previously-promoted employees are often given the option of "bumpback" to their previous position rather than simply facing termination

    Cons

--Trade war between US and China has caught this company square in the middle, causing REC hardships which they did not bring upon themselves
--Negative prospects for the company's future have led many employees to seek employment elsewhere, even though the company itself has strong fundamentals
--Top-heavy management structure, with an inordinate number of middle- and upper-level managers
--Morale for entry-level operators has been negatively impacted by workforce reduction and being overworked
--Some managers with lack of competence or poor teamwork are simply transferred to other departments rather than being rightfully terminated/replaced

    Advice to Management

Work hard to show current employees that they are valued, and continue to retain talented workers to avoid the "exodus" of strong personnel

I have been working at REC SILICON (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and a chance to make a real impact in the organization. Higher level leaders depend on the abilities of lower level workers to drive improvements.

    Cons

Most positions are overworked and given responsibilities for which there is little or no training.

    Advice to Management

Develop your people, don't just make assignments and hope for the best.

    Pros

Descent company to work for. People are generally quite good to work with and the technology is unique. Although more companies are coming into the area, they still remain one of the predominant employers in the area. Good opportunities for growth and internal movement. Benefits are actually decent or at least the industry standard.

    Cons

Salaries may be a tad lower than market value. Moses Lake is a very small town with mostly poor schools and city management. Despite it being a decent place to work IMHO, the is actually a fair amount of turnover.

    Advice to Management

Make salaries fair market value compared to equivalent industries. Know the size of your company and act accordingly, meaning there has been lots of growth with recent expansions, but some policies/management act as if REC is quite small, while others act as if we are huge.

I have been working at REC SILICON full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits
Salary is higher than average for the area

    Cons

Trained staff is fleeing, they see the company failing in the future.
    Bad market outlook
Raises are based on time, not merit. Everyone gets a COLA raise but merit raises based on certifications do not exist

    Advice to Management

    Share future strategies with employees.
    Compensate employees based on merit

I worked at REC SILICON full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very active environment with a lot going on. Excellent benefits package.

    Cons

    Small town with few amenities.
High management turnover and no published direction, so changes in plan every 8 to 10 months.
A lot of placating processes and procedures but not a lot of execution behind adherance to them.

    Advice to Management

    Communicate. Vertically and horizontally.

    Pros

Work is challenging and enjoyable. Training for development is encouraged and supported. Fellow workers and environment are great. REC is trying to achieve work balance.

    Cons

Salaries are about 15 - 20% less than greater western Montana, eastern Washington. Annual salary increases have not kept pace with typical rate of increase for an engineering degree. Therefore, there is a significant rate of staff loss, which increases the work load on those who remain behind.

    Advice to Management

Act promptly to the salary concerns. REC salaries should be above, not below average to attract professionals to come and stay in a small community.
