I have been working at RELX Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible working, global structure, growing L6S expertise and culture, paid time off, benefits competitive. Good intranet to know what's going on.

    Cons

Lots of outsourcing and/or offshoring. No visible career development, lack of training programs in past two or three years. Some sharp managers.

    Advice to Management

Invest in training and career development. People want to be in the company, they believe in the products and can see they could make a difference but managers/directors hands are tied because of huge cost cutting.

    Pros

A good company with great people. Their product diversity, global footprint, and a challenging environment, all add up to an exciting environment to work in.

    Cons

Continuous organizational changes combined with key strategic programs changes are stretching people resources, and at times creating uncertainty. This combined with political challenges, raise question to the overall success over time.

    Advice to Management

Overcome political boundaries, better leverage synergies of skills and talents between business units.

    Pros

On the whole, an environment of very smart, nice people, who want you to succeed. Lots of opportunities to learn about lots of things. Great start to launch your career and explore different directions.

    Cons

Lack of accountability of a few responsible persons within matrix and misdirected blaming get in the way of good management. Lack of resources and funding stunt forward moving projects.

    Advice to Management

Dead weight gets promoted, hard workers either stay and are frustrated or leave and move on to competitor.
Patterns of subordinates leaving or requesting transfers should be alarm bells to evaluate their managers. Also, if a particular position is difficult to keep filled, that is a symptom that something is wrong with how that position is being supported in the company.

I have been working at RELX Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good People to work with, flexible schedule, and the company has a noble mission.

    Cons

Management is a mixed bag. Frequent turnover, infighting, and questionable logic applied to strategy from the director level on up has led to some inconsistent performance over the past 5 years.

Upward mobility in the company is non existent.

    Advice to Management

Get serious about the shift from being a print company to a digital services company. It goes beyond just making products that have a digital footprint or operating them as software as a service. They have to be good, and the supporting functions of your business need to be more tech savvy as well. It requires finding the right people with the right skill sets to meet the demand of the current market, and using folks who are entrenched with a mindset from the past 20 years of a business model that is dying isn't working.

Senior manager - chose line manager wisely with at least a master's or higher degree than the employees they are managing
C-level. Make sure the company vision and strategies are implemented to the lowest teams the eco- system

    Pros

    Cons

Extremely poor change management. Constant change without proper foresight, management, training or back-office system upgrades leads to poor results and then more changes the next year, including annual lay offs.

    Advice to Management

Stick to your core values and actually value your people. Long time employees with strong knowledge base shouldn't be driven out or laid off if you want to succeed.
