  1. "REM MN: Passable employment but the job is often hindered by the politics of the organization."

I have been working at REM full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Competitive wage determined by difficulty of clients up to $13.10 an hour. Houses are generally well stocked with groceries and there is a healthy menu. Medical administrator training is through and staff receive PIA training.

    Cons

Staff are often criticized for client behaviors they have no control over. Staff find it difficult to get time off due to low staffing. Clients with high level behaviors are placed in homes due to the amount of money they bring to the company rather than if their needs can be met by the staff available . There is an extremely high turn over rate which places extreme pressure on existing staff to pick up hours until and after burn out is achieved.

    Advice to Management

The company needs to be more focused on the day to day client cares. Management needs to step in (PDs too) when staff have been working for days on end to give them a break . Staff often complain that the company does not care about them or their safety and personal lives, only about the money clients bring in.

I worked at REM (Less than a year)

    Pros

Helping people with mental illnesses is a selfless and humble job, it teaches you humility and kindness that most other jobs just are not able to teach you.

    Cons

I struggled with the management not being involved enough, it was hard for me as a person to not be able to help people in need when their emotional health was going unnoticed.

    Advice to Management

It's important to come to the group home and visit the people you are in charge of treating, the only way to know what's really going on with them is not over the phone, it's hands on in person, checking to make sure they're doing okay and that your staff is doing okay.

    Cons

Work overload was a bit much at times, starting salary was low for the amount of work. No annual raises with performance reviews. Long drawn out process to terminate poor employees.

    Advice to Management

Raise rates of pay for employees and better commit to screening and hiring well qualified individuals.

    I worked at REM full-time

    Pros

The work was fairly easy and extremely rewarding. The experiences that any direct support staff have vary depending on the clientele, but more often than not, I looked forward to going to work.

    Cons

If you have a lot of patience and good management, there are no cons. Those conditions, however, are imperative for maintaining a career with REM.

    Advice to Management

Hold your staff to a high standard, if for no other reason that the clientele's quality of life, which is of utmost importance.
