I worked at ROTH Capital Partners part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Interned in IB - great company and solid deal flow. Easy access to senior management. Saw multiple deals close and eventually price.

    Cons

Headquartered in Newport Beach, so not very convenient if attending schools in downtown Los Angeles. Also not many other interns so you are left mainly associating with Associates and Senior VP's.

    Advice to Management

Begin to develop a formal internship program which moves interns around the the firm - from Capital Markets to IB to Sales & Trading. Also, increase intern pay.

A way to get your foot in the industry. This is a Banking shop.

    Cons

Costs are cut at the expense of business. Management initiatives aren't supported.

    Pros

Very relaxed atmosphere, nice location, nice office. They also throw sick conferences every year in Dana Point. All in all, it's a pretty decent place to work and it holds a good presence in California.

    Cons

Pay is lower than street, there's a very obvious divide in culture between IBD and the rest of the firm. A good amount of turnover from people either getting fired or leaving for other firms.

    Advice to Management

Maybe pay more or find some direction for the firm now that China isn't a thing anymore.

    Pros

fun working environment. you will learn a lot if you're newer to the industry

    Cons

terrible compensation. investment banking analysts, associates, and VPs are paid a tiny fraction (30%ish) of what you can make at more mainstream firms. a lot of the hard working people who drive the success in the firm are paid peanuts. top management tries to keep all the money from themselves and is always looking for a way to get their hands in your pocket.

    Advice to Management

pay more. youre retention will be much higher

I have been working at ROTH Capital Partners full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

mgmt does not micro manage. you come and go as you please. decent pay outs compared to the street.

    Cons

small cap product which is often illiquid; buyside is looking for the opposite: larger market cap and liquidity
investment bankers and research analysts do very limited due dilligence, sometimes none at all
they do not strive to improve themselves
they are considered a deal shop, but will not pay up for talented bankers
quality of companies/deals are horrendous and many are frauds

    Advice to Management

each department needs a real manager who is motivated to implement change. sales & research especially.

    Pros

    Great location, mostly good people.

    Cons

Misses out on the meritocracy part of investment banking. Too political.

    Advice to Management

More transparency needed. Ex-China, firm hasn't grown in a decade despite huge market opportunity and decade long run in its specialty, small cap stocks. Seems the top dogs would much rather 90% of a small pie instead of a a slightly smaller portion of a much bigger pie.
