    I worked at RSM Bird Cameron full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    My at-level colleagues were great. Probably because we felt like we were in the trenches together. Generous beer budget.

    Cons

    Extremely poor management that comes from the top down. Boys club. Sexism is rife. A partner slapped me on the bum one day and told me I had “a nice box” (I was carrying a box of printing paper). Bullying is accepted and encouraged. Back stabbing and shaming colleagues who make honest mistakes is common. You’ll be fine if you become a favourite to one of the partners (usually straight, white men).

    Advice to Management

    Get new management. Stop promoting arrogant white men.

    Pros

    - Large, global mid-tier firm (although you wouldn't know it, given the girls in marketing seem to be more interested in chirping about last night's Big Brother episode than promoting the firm. - Marginally better pay than Big 4 or suburban firms

    Cons

    Cliquey staff - generally, people prefer to form or join exclusive groups based on what private schools they attended. If you actually care enough to converse with them, be sure you follow important current events such as footy (men), fashion (women) or reality TV. Insecure managers - make sure you work hard but not smart. Managers can't afford to have their subordinates appearing more knowledgeable than... themselves in front of partners. If you want to be promoted don't worry yourself with all that accounting mumbo-jumbo, just focus on what footy team the partner follows and who won last night's Masterchef challenge. There's more but I've lost interest.

    Keep doing what you're doing, seems to be working well for you. Advice to prospective employees: look elsewhere. Or don't. I don't care.

    Pros

    Down to earth colleagues across the firm (great if you love footy!), good client base often punches above weight, partners and staff are technically proficient, good cross-selling across different practice areas, flexible working arrangements (under certain partners only)

    Cons

    Gender and culturally imbalanced at partnership and senior staff levels nationally, old-fashioned management practices (e.g. debating neck ties in the office, bloated rather than flatter organisational structure), practice of "eating time" is institutionally ingrained across many practice areas, some partners promote on length of service rather than merit resulting in slow or limited career progression, some... partners especially in Business Services are prone to clock watching and micro-managing their staff

    Management needs to recognise the need to create career paths for all staff (partners and staff should have a shared obligation towards each employee's growth), partners should be compelled to be more active in business development (rather than protect existing client base and rest on laurels), effectiveness of recruitment practices conducted by HR should be thoroughly reviewed

    I worked at RSM Bird Cameron full-time

    Pros

    People were great. It is an international and multidiscipline company. Encourages networking. If you are a CA you have an opportunity to do a secondment overseas. Firm hugely supports CA studies and provides extra tuition. There is a high retention of employees. Has graduate program and promotes continual training and development.

    Cons

    If your a CPA, you are not able to apply for the secondment. Hours are not flexible. Not salary competitive. Alot of time dedication to the office is not always rewarded. There is no movement for promotion when there is a lower turnover of staff. However there are times when there is a turnover of employees. Highly micromanaged.

    Advice to Management

    Managers need to have more consideration towards equal opportunity amongst the professional staff. There is alot of favouritism. Have more confidence in your staff to perform the work and not have every correspondence reviewed 2 or 3 times before being sent. Encourage staff to be open and allow opportunities to staff to experience different departments.

    Not all partners are rotten

    Cons

    Bad management across the board HR are directed by the man at the top and do not protect anyone who makes a valid complaint with evidence to back up the complaint. You are not protected under any of the policies that they claim to enforce. You are targeted by your peers in certain areas within the organization when making a legitimate report of misconduct. The partnership are blind to the truth opting to not... seek as they focus on making their profit Staff are pushed beyond breaking point. There is no true work life balance. You will not advance in your career as it's a boys club. If you speak up, you will be in front of HR talking about your behaviour and ultimately receive a written/formal warning. You want to work here, be prepared to be subjected to incompetence, bullying, and a tarnished reputation.

    Advice to Management

    Grow up and start cleaning up your dirt. Start at the top and question everything!!! Don't settle on those who hold an executive title as they are no more important than the rest of you. Open your eyes!

    Pretty good work life balance. People are very nice Pretty good central city location Nice office and the desks are open plan so you can socialise The clients you work for are varied

    Very very low pay The work involved can at times be a bit repetitive No bonus scheme No room to get promoted

    I have been working at RSM Bird Cameron full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Smaller than a Big 4 so a friendlier, more relaxed culture, but still big enough to get good brand recognition and be able to move around

    Cons

    - although the firm is global, secondment opportunities are only available to Audit staff for short term stays - salaries are generally lower than Big 4 firms

    Advice to Management

    On the whole you are all doing a great job, but remember to listen to your subordinates - upwards feedback can be just as important as downwards and it fosters better morale within the firm.
