I worked at RTI Health Solutions full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Non profit, research only, division of Research Triangle Institute in North Carolina. Offices in US and Europe. Pays well and projects have public health benefit (although clients are virtually all pharmaceutical companies).

    Cons

Company is changing and growing; focus of work is in Barcelona and Research Triangle Park, NC. Has grown from <50 to >200 in about 15 years. Management structure has not kept up with growth. Projects and finances are carefully managed; people not so much.

    Advice to Management

Think about the ratio of managers to people; it seems relatively low. Think about the function of remote work sites and how they are supported or not by HQ.

    Pros

Flexible work arrangement (remote, part time, flexible hours)
    Emphasis on high quality work
    very smart talented staff
Very good retirement benefits (automatic contribute to vested account (no matching requirement))

    Cons

Credential-oriented industry; if you don't have a PhD and you are in a research position, there is no upward mobility.
Heavy emphasis on hitting billable hour targets, no overtime compensation.

    Pros

RTI-HS is a well-respected scientific organization that conducts some very good research. There are many renowned scientists who work within the organization whose work results make a positive difference in people's health care.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the organization is very traditional and hierarchical and appears to be behind the times when it comes to innovation. Innovation and general development is not valued or encourage as it takes time away from being "billable." There are no employee incentives, no rewards or recognition for jobs well-done.

    Advice to Management

There are many bright and innovative people at RTI-HS. Engage ALL employees, not just senior leadership. Begin an active growth and development program. Without engaging all levels of employees, you will never really know why the business is running like it is.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Depending upon who you work for, the benefits vary significantly. Rated as one of the "best places to work" by Forbes.

    Cons

Time off and flexible schedule depends upon manager. No 360 reviews. Many lazy people who happen to have written in obscure academic journals can get away with just about anything.

    Advice to Management

Conduct anonymous surveys. Manage the managers. Don't skimp on support staff. Use personnel wisely. Several highly toxic employees need to be let go. This isn't the first organization of this kind...stop trying to reinvent the wheel.
