I worked at RTKL Associates full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Overall, great people to work with. They provide training.

    Cons

Not very flexible. No bonuses unless you're at the top. Low salary compared to the rest of the industry. Too much work and not enough pay. Not much upward mobility.

    Advice to Management

Pay more, so that you can keep your employees longer. Hire more people, so you don't overwork your current employees.

I worked at RTKL Associates full-time

    Pros

The location in Dupont Circle was convenient to commute to. Some interesting projects at neat locations throughout DC. Benefits were not bad.

    Cons

Did not like the open office design. There was no real opportunities for me to advance at the company, which is why I chose to leave.

I have been working at RTKL Associates full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, longer PTO compared to other similar companies, get the opportunity to design and follow up your project consistently, more or less, but still, for a large firm like this you need to switch around projects.

    Cons

Not innovative enough in terms of design, though the corporate level pushes so. Cost driven, profit driven, few projects could make you really proud as being an architect. Low pay, even consider the longer PTO, if I convert the extra PTO into value based on RTKL standard, my salary is still way lower than other firms in market.

    Advice to Management

    Pay more attention to design.

I worked at RTKL Associates (More than 5 years)

    Pros

RTKL is a great place to start your career. It affords those just starting out the opportunity to get exposure and hone their skills. It is also a great place to hold up if you're between opportunities but do not plan on getting comfortable unless you know the right person.

    Cons

Depending on the department, RTKL is not a place in which one is allowed fair opportunity for growth. There are no clearly defined processes, no metric system to measure career growth and nepotism is blatant. If you want career growth, have a social relationship with upper management because hard work and dedication is not recognized.

    Advice to Management

People want to be appreciated and recognized for their hard work. Make a conscience effort to make your entire staff feel as if they are part of the team. You would be amazed at how far actual team work will go. Also, make a note that in a competitive market provide competitive wages or you will continue to lose highly qualified people to the highest bidder.

    Pros

good employer. everyone here is very nice, and helpful

    Cons

Not much to learn concerning design. Projects here are very cost-driven. We don't have much chance to really design form or challenge conventional architecture
