    I worked at Rackspace full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great Culture of customer care and support. Seems to be getting more focused on services now that new leadership has taken them private. Dependable operations and support. Always impressed with how many smart and talented everyone was across all technical roles.

    Cons

    Little room to move up in the sales org. Sales leadership 2 years ago was filled with outside hires.

    I have been working at Rackspace full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    For San Antonio area the pay and benefits are above average. The company culture is one that encourages leaning and personal and professional growth. Rackspace is easily the best employer I have ever had.

    Cons

    There has been a lot of change over the past year and with the buy-out more changes are to come. Some of the change is good and long over due however there has been a lot of change that is not good. Morale within the castle is pretty low. Linux Admins I and II are now hourly positions thus you will not be a salaried professional but a hourly employee. There is little continuity in the expectation of skill level between the shifts. What is expected of a L1 on first shift is not the same as a L1 on any of the after hours shifts.

    Advice to Management

    Give us our salaries back. Make us professionals again and allow us to put in the extra time, work, and love that has made this company great in the past and we will make it even greater.

    I have been working at Rackspace (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    San Antonio is an easy city to live in with great weather
    Many areas still have startup feel
    Given ownership, flexibility and autonomy with most projects and responsibilities
    Comfortable and open working environment
    Many very friendly and genuine people work here
    Has paid pretty well. Not the best but pretty well comparatively

    Cons

    Lacks the structure an accountability of a grown-up company
    Unknowns swirling around with recent privatization
    Performance Reviews style and system is horribly inconsistent. Good in some areas, bad in the rest.
    Limited opportunity for advancement depending on the team you're in

    Advice to Management

    It's still a good-ol-boy system in many areas
    Managers are required to do a lot in the weeds and that needs to change
    Drop your egos, it's a major turn off
    Don't speak to us like we're children

    I have been working at Rackspace full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    * Flexible
    * Friendly
    * Progressive
    * The company cares a lot about investing in your skills
    * Training is available per managers approval.

    Cons

    * Sometimes I get the sense that upper leadership isn't very organized
    * The work isn't always interesting
    * Things sometimes change faster then they are completed
    * Processes aren't very solidified

    Advice to Management

    Work on the processes that the developers like, rather then on the ones that you think would help keep track of the work easier or get the work done faster.

    Pros

    Great benefits, good hearted people, people who for the most part want to effect positive change in the company

    Cons

    Every few months the focus shifts and there is a mandatory, clear vision. Then leadership changes and we change the focus again. Hopefully with the new president, who is a longtime Racker, we will stay focused on the right thing this time.

    I have been working at Rackspace full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Always events that engage the entire company. Higher leadership is very transparent about goings-on at the company and monthly info sessions called "Open Book" are held with the CEO. Coffee shop in the corporate office. Extensive training and education offered to employees wanting to become more technical.

    Cons

    Limited opportunity for mobility. Hiring for various areas of the company is very rare and highly competitive. Parking and traffic around the building in the morning/during rush hour can be a hassle.

    I worked at Rackspace full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Smart, engaging colleagues trying to do well. Great culture (but changing). Lots of perks. Lots of autonomy in my job.

    Cons

    The culture is changing and not always for the better. They have a strong set of core values that permeates everything they do... and I loved it... until a new sales executive came in and gutted it. Our entire team quit, transferred, or was let go within a year. He didn't value the culture and seemed to set about dismantling it quickly. Such a shame. I would love to have stayed with them but left because of that executive. I wish them well and hope they weed out people him and find their roots again.

    Advice to Management

    Hire leaders who actually buy into your core values instead of referring to them as 'cult like' and destroying them.

    I worked at Rackspace full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Chilled out environment that let me have a voice. Never felt like anyone was not available to talk about anything. Great management experience in the end, but I was tossed around a little to try and find the right spot for me. They truly love their company, and are passionate about what it stands for: fanatical support.

    Cons

    No privacy. Never alone time. Small desk area. Lacks management respect from the younger generation being hired out of college, but are probably still wicked smart.

    Advice to Management

    No need to have 1:1 every week. Just reach out via email to see how they are doing. The meetings upon meetings are just useless. Tell them how it's going to be and then, if you get feedback, take it on from there.
