Pros
Rackspace is very flexible and has great benefits
Cons
work life balance can be very difficult at times.

Pros
Learning resources, Teammates, Paycheck, Stocks, Regular scheduling, Work, health insurance.
Cons
You will be lied to by upper management. The company only cares about their fiscal debt and income. This is obvious, but when command makes a mistake or a deal turns south. That means the work force gets laid off and kicked to the curb under signed NDA which is all standard. But it's Texas so the employee has no power, and the company has all of it. As far as I know additional severance and benefits were paid out for the layoff. But with the right to work state those making the business decisions keep their stock options while cutting payroll. The companies ethics are based out of Texas. When the going gets tough they outsource their expenses overseas where laws are less ethical & stringent.

Amazing Benefits, Amazing People
Jan 7, 2020 - Software Developer III in Blacksburg, VARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I work in the Blacksburg office and it is a shining star among the dev community. One of the core values here is to treat Rackers (coworkers) like Friends and Family and it shows in our office. Everyone here knows each other by name we have monthly get togethers and many holiday events etc. Some of us play games after work together etc. everyone just has fun exploring their job and their interests together. Outside of the culture though Rackspace is an awesome place to work. I get 260 hours of PTO per year (I believe only 180 at start but even that is awesome) meaning I can take vacation and get the relaxation and recharge I need. Our office has super flexible hours some people come in as early as 5am and some as late a 11am. For Blacksburg our pay is very high as well several coworkers have stay-at-home spouses and live comfortably with multiple kids on a single salary from Rackspace. Health benefits are great as well Rackspace covers the vast majority of our health costs I believe my monthly cost is only $10-20. Rackspace might just be the best place to work for work/life balance. No one asks questions about last-minute vacation or any other reason you need to be out. Our office in particular cares about your health above all else and you do what you need to do with no real worry of any work issues. My work stays at the office.
Cons
Volatile senior leadership. It rarely affects the Blacksburg office directly since we aren't the main corporate office but since going private we have had several CEOs over the past few years with entire new leadership teams. Our office is fairly insulated as we have our own internal leadership though so as long as you go to Blacksburg I think there aren't any major cons.

terrible salaries, good benefits, fading glory and the koolaide has finally worn off
Dec 17, 2013 -RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
excellent coworkers, very smart, very intelligent and initially you learn a lot. Pretty good health benefits (although they are doing away with some really good plans). If you work at the Castle (San Antonio, TX) location there is a lot of stuff you can do during your break. If you think going down a slide is cool then you choose the right play ground.
Cons
Depending on the team you are in, the rot of management might start either at the manager level or above. Some VPs are just clueless who have installed their "YES MEN" everywhere. The level of distrust in certain departments worries me and makes it a terrible environment to work in. The coolness culture is going (if not already gone) and one thing has always remained constant (unless you are in mgmt) ...terrible pay. So if you are planning to work here don't complain about your pay (rackspace does not believe in paying you well). Cloud is where the growth is but the product just does not do justice to amount of money they have spent (are spending)...i Think the RAX revenue = google's cloud budget (joke..but i might be right). Life is getting tough here with low pay, no raises and terrible mgmt.

Enjoy what I do and the people I do it with

Great culture, clear career path progression, goals and objectives clearly well defined.
Cons
Company culture is changing slightly and losing the love I once had at the beginning. Management is going through a major change right now and feels most of the benefits are going.

Being a Valued Member of a Winning Team on an Inspiring Mission
Feb 4, 2019 - Linux Engineer in San Antonio, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Rackspace is highly focused on ensuring you have a great experience. They are one of the better employers in San Antonio (even though they have slipped quite a bit in the industry). Looking back, the thing I miss the most is the feeling of working with family and friends. It's tough to build that and Rackspace has done a great job from that aspect. I'd say the biggest benefit from a compensation perspective would be the vacation time. Vacation is important and Rackspace is one of the better companies in the industry (and I'm not counting the 'unlimited' vacation companies). There are benefits (coffee shop and food trucks) that let you know you're working somewhere special. If you're in the San Antonio market, then you should absolutely consider Rackspace as an employer. I still miss this place!
Cons
Rackspace was an amazing place to work, but now it's just cool. Overall, leadership has been completely gutted a number of times over and it continues to happen. These decisions aren't inspiring for anyone. There used to be a sentiment that you could work hard and the most talented would rise to the top. Now, almost every single one of the SLT members are an external hire which sends signals to all current Rackers to leave if you want to move up. Rackspace is also pretty terrible when it comes to pay and it's getting worse. It used to be a decent excuse to take less to have more fun at work (and I was happy to do so). The fun has pretty much gone away but the low pay still exists. I've also noticed that leadership is fairly disconnected with Rackers. You don't really see them or hear from them unless something major happens. Every previous CEO would walk around the campus just to speak with Rackers and to see if there was anything they could help. Servant leadership used to be a big deal. I'm a lot of these behaviors stems from the buyout, but keeping everyone happy is extremely important to ensuring Rackspace stays valuable.
Continue readingThank you so much for your feedback. We're disappointed to hear your thoughts around our leadership team and promoting from within. We do have formal opportunities for our Rackers to grow into new roles and strive to promote from within when possible, but appreciate the opportunity to continuously improve. We are so glad you enjoyed our vacation time policy. We appreciate you taking the time to leave us your thoughts!

Working at Rackspace as a developer, pretty awesome
Sep 8, 2016 - Team Lead in Austin, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great company culture, decent compensation, and great flexibility. Many opportunities to grow and shift your career. Rackspace University is a huge benefit if you're working at or willing to go down to San Antonio.
Cons
Frequent re-orgs can be a pain and add to some instability in employment. Your experience in Rackspace can be pretty dependent on which manager you get. Would like to see more consistency in the employee experience.

If you're in San Antonio, this is the tech place to be.
Jun 26, 2012 - Anonymous Employee in San Antonio, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great benefits and a SLT group that cares about the culture. Benefits are close to those that you'd expect in silicon valley but right here in San Antonio. Great opportunity for growth and a chance to be a part of great IT.
Cons
It's a smaller company that's getting big fast. There are some growth pains but they are being fixed.
