I have been working at Ralphs part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Unionized with a potential to enroll in the union's health insurance plan. Minimum hours guaranteed. Up to 2 paid sick days offered. Vacation and pay increase the longer you are in the company, yet pay does not increase substantially. Ability to cross-train in other departments depending on availability. At least one day off guaranteed.

    Cons

Scheduling may not be stable or may not be the same week by week, depending on which department you work in. Strong interpersonal and emotional skills are needed since it is a food service-oriented environment. Customers, co-workers, and supervisors may not always be nice.

    Advice to Management

More stable and consistent scheduling. More opportunities to cross-train in other departments.

I have been working at Ralphs part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    1) The pay is good (starting is $13 - $13.45 somewhere around those 2 numbers)
    2) If you are charismatic and good with people you will have a great time.
    3) They are flexible with hours but some cons to this as well.
    4) Co-workers are great and make working there so much better.
    5) Work is easy once you get into the "rythm" of the job.
    6) Most of the managers are great and once you get to know each other and they are extremely friendly and flexible with you.
    7) Most customers are so nice and understanding and with the store being in a small town, you tend to see a lot of familiar faces and this gives you an opportunity to be more personal with customers and make them feel great and in turn brightens your day.

    Cons

    1) Upper Management feels unorganized and seems very unsympathetic for employees at times.
    2) Scheduling is definitely something that will become an issue once you join our team. Sometimes it feels like they try and make you work outside your availability.
    3) There are customers that like/tend to be difficult and especially at night.
    4) You stand up a lot so buy some good shoes.
    5) The Union do not help you a lot of the time. I have had no reason to go to the union with any issues yet but other employees have told me stories and have told me about the union and it seems like they don't help much.
    6) It seems like they don't train you for everything that you need to know (for a cashier and courtesy clerk) and you pretty much have to ask people on the job on how you do things and how to do them.

    Advice to Management

    • Make scheduling and time management a priority
    • Be more sympathetic to your employees and try and work with them to come to any agreement and compromise.

I worked at Ralphs full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are good, if you work full time.

    Cons

Management is not the best. I have a few friends that have worked here and they all got the same treatment as I did. They try to scam you into working more hours, they train you for stuff you don't need and expect you to learn the rest on your own. I had one day of on the job training and after that I was literally running the whole department and closing on my own for 8 hour shifts 40 hours a week, when I had applied for 20 hours as a part time position through college. Awful place

    Advice to Management

You wouldn't have such a high turnover rate if you treated your employees with respect.
