    Pros

The only good thing I can think of is that if you are there long enough you qualify to receive a pension.

    Cons

Ramsey County is the most abusive environment in which it has been my misfortune to work. The commissioners swan about making over $85,000 a year for what is essentially a part-time job but are clueless about what is going on with the rank and file. It is an extremely hierarchical institution in which change occurs at a sloth's pace.

Department directors only provide the commissioners with enough information about projects to stroke their egos and to make themselves look good. Individuals are promoted to positions for which they are not qualified based solely it being "his or her time". There is at least one director in a very public position for which he is not qualified and is the laughing stock of peers in other agencies.

Policies abound, including one which is supposed to encourage a respectful work environment. It looks good on paper but in practice it is completely ignored. Complaints about employee abuse and victimization fall on deaf ears. While there is a policy regarding diversity, there seems to be little awareness that this means more than hiring people of color - I'm caucasian and even I can see glaring omissions.

    I could go on . . . .

    Advice to Management

My advice to the commissioners would be to stop rubber stamping proposals from department heads, including the county manager, and educate yourselves about what is really going on. That is if you can find anyone in the organization who is honest and brave enough to tell you as they would likely be subject to retribution.

Stop promoting people who are not qualified for their jobs - this reflects badly on the organization as a whole and makes people in the community question your competence.

Listen to ALL employees and not simply those with an impressive title. Encourage creativity and provide the tools necessary to implement new and innovative ideas. Get rid of dead wood - there is enough of it at the county to heat half the homes in St. Paul for a winter.

Truly provide a respectful work environment - not just one that looks good on paper.

    Pros

Get a pay check while you look for a new job. I did and found a much better work place.

    Cons

Management by mean girls who get ahead by undermining staff.

    Advice to Management

Clean house. Doing the work should matter more than kissing up.

I worked at Ramsey County full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I gained great experience dealing with different types of people and new cultures. I learned valuable counseling methods and how to become more focused on the clients. The co workers are amazing people . They are one of the few countries that will hire without nutrition experience. And the starting pay is good .

    Cons

The job had a really high burnout rate. You will deal with some awful clients, who will intentionally trying to push your buttons and will yell and swear at you, for following the strict procedures. I don't know how many times I'd heard "my baby is going to starve because of you".The managers are heartless and don't care about their employees. There is an extremely high turn over rate. Limited options to be promoted.

    Advice to Management

Try to be nicer to the employees. We would be less likely to quit if you showed any interest in what we are doing. Stop hiring temps, so we can spend weeks training them, only to let them go 4 months later, making us start the process all over again. The other counties don't have these problems .

I worked at Ramsey County full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Ability to help the youth of St Paul. The opportunity to spend quality time directing and interacting with youth that have mental, emotional and behavioral issues. A chance to council and mentor, truly make a difference in a child's life.

    Cons

Extremely stressful job when working in the institutions. Management isn't very supportive. A lot of new staff with little direction and not a very safe environment.

    Advice to Management

Be more centered on the well being of the staff.
