    Pros

Strong community between faculty, staff and students. Overall, people are friendly and self motivated. Due to the small size of our school there is a very special connection with the students and those that utilize our services are very appreciative of what we have to offer to them. The area in which I work has a very close team and we all collaborate very well together. Immediate supervision is superb and we are always recognized for a job well done. There is a true understanding here of the life/work balance. It is very autonomous and each individual just needs to manage their time effectively in order to get the job done in a timely manner.

    Cons

As with most organizations there are budget restrictions that make it difficult to do all that we would like to do as a department. However, through collaboration with other departments and support from senior management we are usually able to push through special projects/programs if they are seen as valuable for all.

Sometimes the size of the school is a challenge. Due to how small it is, it is difficult to get recognition on a regional/national level with colleagues in my field.

    Advice to Management

Don't ever forget that we are here to serve and educate the students first.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Randolph College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

+Pay is the best in the region for academia
+It isn't sunshine and rainbows quite yet, but the work environment is much better than before with four years of enrollment growth (despite being in the middle of a recession and small liberal arts colleges failing left and right)
+Everyone absolutely loves the new administration that seems very responsive to students, faculty, and staff
+Small size gives plenty of opportunities to cut through red-tape
+Part of tuition exchange program for dependents

    Cons

+Pay is far below national average (but cost of living is ridiculously cheap, so that isn't a deal breaker)
+No tuition reimbursement for graduate coursework
+Effectiveness of VPs vary by department
+Still haven't quite left the "survival-mode" mentality, so management still expects an extraordinary amount of effort without additional compensation

    Advice to Management

+Be willing to ax VPs from the previous administration. Some are highly regarded by their subordinates, but many are not.
+Consider more ethnic diversity in mid-management/upper-management (there's no hint of racism on campus...but why are all the directors and VPs white, especially with such a diverse student body?)

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Randolph College part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

small staff and recognition, everyone is willing to help each other and make the department and school better for each other and of course the students

    Cons

being a small school we are limited to some of the majors offered compared to other schools, and the small student body affects some of the potential incoming students

    Advice to Management

The biggest issue is getting a larger student body, perhaps accepting students earlier on academic standings that do not need need based aid that would be on waiting list and allow them to decide to come by giving them a chance to make it at the institution and grow the student body at no cost to the school other than a potential hit on the dropout rate if they cannot handle the workload and standards of the school

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Randolph College part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

One of the things I liked best about working in the chemistry department was the friendly and encouraging attitudes of my superiors. I was encouraged to ask questions, be confident, and feel like part of the team. I was also appreciated for my hard work and praised accordingly.

    Cons

The student worker positions don't pay much (minimum wage), but because of the hands on experience I gained with teaching, lab protocol, and instruments - something that is so rare in larger universities - so the benefit of the position isn't really monetary compensation.

    Advice to Management

I do not have any complaints nor advice for management at this time. Both the professor and the lab manager I worked with were wonderful.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Randolph College part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Family atmosphere where almost everyone knows and cares about you.

    Cons

Some admins seem to think the same approach will deliver better results than before and clash with others if given suggestions stunting growth of student body.

    Advice to Management

Have more open box suggestions on approaches and allow departments that thrive decide their path and approach for the future and take those giving advice from the thriving areas to help those struggling.
