I have been working at Rational Enterprise full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There is a perfect balance of fun and work at Rational. Everyone on the Development Team is valued for their opinions and work together toward a common goal of making our software better. The senior team is always willing to help out some of the younger guys and the team is always looking for ways to improve. I have worked on a few development teams in the are and working at Rational has been the best team I have been on so far. It seem that Rational has got a bad rap, due to a few bad eggs that were let go (mostly from the Client Management and Project Management groups).

    Cons

Some of the benefits could be a little better and the office could use a little bit of a makeover but overall not many cons.

    Pros

Employees get new laptops. Curent product is developed using cutting-edge technologies. Development team is small and close. No micromanagement.

    Cons

Not many; security is lax, no dress code if you consider those cons.

I have been working at Rational Enterprise full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The development team is about 10 members and everyone works well together.

Being a smaller company, as a developer you'll have the opportunity to work on the entire stack, from frontend to backend work. You won't feel pigeon holed into one small part of the applications. With that comes responsibility, but it's a great way to learn. The tech stack has also been modernized, so you'll be able to work with some cool stuff like Angularjs and Spring Boot.

The company has recently been trying to improve employee benefits and perks, so we have bagels ordered for the office weekly, there is a non-alcoholic drink fridge which is always stocked, and we have company lunch-ins and outings quarterly.

Good location as well—right off the highway; nice lunch spots around.

Good work/life balance. There is a support on-call rotation divvied among the team.

    Cons

Sometimes unrealistic goals and deadlines are set, but I think this is endemic with smaller companies. Not to say the development team receives flack for this, but it's something that can weigh on your conscience.

    Advice to Management

Be realistic about goals and deadlines.

I have been working at Rational Enterprise full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Management is good at limiting meetings so devs can actually do development work.
    - Everyone is willing to listen to new ideas and implement them if they are good.
    - Leadership opportunities are readily available if you are willing.
    - Really laid back environment and great work atmosphere

    Cons

Nothing to complain about honestly. I guess it would be nice to have offices instead of cubicles but that isn't really important.

I have been working at Rational Enterprise full-time

    Pros

Rational has a small software team (under 10 developers). This creates a good environment where developers aren't micromanaged and are allowed to do a good job. Management is open to suggestions for improvements and is always looking for ways they can improve. Previous management has been poor but things are improving greatly and Rational is turning into a great place to work

    Cons

If you aren't used to a saas software model, Rational might not be for you. Due to business , sometimes requirements change but things are getting better.

    Pros

New features & products are constantly being developed. If you are ambitious and desire meaningful experience, there is plenty of opportunity for career growth.

    Cons

If you are unfamiliar with supporting a product that is used 24/7, you may have a difficult time adjusting to the work environment.

I have been working at Rational Enterprise full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

you get paid. that is all.

    Cons

Owners do not trust any employees, a lot of closed door conversations. Employees treated like cattle. Leaders are out of touch with reality. Company owner served prison time for defrauding government. Company gets most of its money from owner's past business relationships.

    Advice to Management

why bother giving advice to management they do not want any.

I have been working at Rational Enterprise full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The development team is trusted to own the code and make technical decisions. There have been interesting projects over the last year and more on the roadmap. The dev manager is committed to improving our product and making sure the team has enough time to get projects done, and team-driven process improvement efforts are fully supported. The company as a whole is full of smart, hardworking people.

    Cons

The company is going through some growing pains. There was quite a bit of turnover leaving some teams understaffed, and some management politics that we're thankfully shielded from. There are often more projects than people, which can lead to some prioritization issues.

    Advice to Management

Try to be more realistic about the amount of work our small team can accomplish. If you want the agility to adapt priorities to meet business opportunities, we'll need to invest more time in the architecture and infrastructure to support it. Keep up the positive work and improvements made so far!

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Rational Enterprise full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Reasonable dev , test , and IT folks (while they last)
A product that is theoretically interesting from the POV of how much data it processes
If you can stay for six months to a year (so that everyone who started there before you leaves or is fired), you could become important (but don't fly too close to the sun or you will get burned)

    Cons

The company is created , run by, and serves lawyers - as a result, the people are treated like disposables (as a lot of law firms have the tendency to do). You will see people fired and walked out the door out of the blue without any concern for the individual
There is constant intrigue, drama, and strife even among the established figures in the company. The 'little guys' are just peons that are just used for a while, then disposed of.
The technology is mostly crap - a legacy web app, and a boat-load of stored procedures
You're constantly under the gun for hard deadlines from customers. Add the crappy software on top that breaks any time it pleases, and you're on call 24/7
Although there is a "dev & test" team in HQ, the real software development happens offshore, and the "dev & test" team are there just for support and maintenance of the legacy system. You will hear "we're growing the team", but it never happens.

    Advice to Management

There is not much to suggest - the place is rotten to the core. In some alternate reality this could be an interesting technology company to work at, if it weren't for all the people at the helm
