I have been working at Rational Enterprise full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Not many, some colleagues are willing to work together. Good products but both still in their infancy.

    Cons

Many! HR poor out dated policies and work standards. Training poor. No direction from management or HR. Most departments live in their own little rice bowl. No teamwork between departments. very cliche. Two Software products, neither team helps out the other. All but one upper management don't know what they are doing. Owner has no vision or culture for this company. No professionalism from most employees.

I have been working at Rational Enterprise full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There is a perfect balance of fun and work at Rational. Everyone on the Development Team is valued for their opinions and work together toward a common goal of making our software better. The senior team is always willing to help out some of the younger guys and the team is always looking for ways to improve. I have worked on a few development teams in the are and working at Rational has been the best team I have been on so far. It seem that Rational has got a bad rap, due to a few bad eggs that were let go (mostly from the Client Management and Project Management groups).

    Cons

Some of the benefits could be a little better and the office could use a little bit of a makeover but overall not many cons.

    Pros

Employees get new laptops. Curent product is developed using cutting-edge technologies. Development team is small and close. No micromanagement.

    Cons

Not many; security is lax, no dress code if you consider those cons.

I have been working at Rational Enterprise full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The development team is about 10 members and everyone works well together.

Being a smaller company, as a developer you'll have the opportunity to work on the entire stack, from frontend to backend work. You won't feel pigeon holed into one small part of the applications. With that comes responsibility, but it's a great way to learn. The tech stack has also been modernized, so you'll be able to work with some cool stuff like Angularjs and Spring Boot.

The company has recently been trying to improve employee benefits and perks, so we have bagels ordered for the office weekly, there is a non-alcoholic drink fridge which is always stocked, and we have company lunch-ins and outings quarterly.

Good location as well—right off the highway; nice lunch spots around.

Good work/life balance. There is a support on-call rotation divvied among the team.

    Cons

Sometimes unrealistic goals and deadlines are set, but I think this is endemic with smaller companies. Not to say the development team receives flack for this, but it's something that can weigh on your conscience.

    Advice to Management

Be realistic about goals and deadlines.

    Pros

    - Management is good at limiting meetings so devs can actually do development work.
    - Everyone is willing to listen to new ideas and implement them if they are good.
    - Leadership opportunities are readily available if you are willing.
    - Really laid back environment and great work atmosphere

    Cons

Nothing to complain about honestly. I guess it would be nice to have offices instead of cubicles but that isn't really important.

I have been working at Rational Enterprise (More than a year)

    Pros

Start-up environment but with the stability of a larger company Rational allows employees to contribute and have a direct impact on the products and technology. It's a fun and challenging environment that has made a lot of very positive changes over the last year and is moving in the right direction with both the technology and the work environment.

    Cons

Some of the benefits could be a little better such as more vacation time and maybe a 401k contribution (but I guess that's a general downside of a smaller company).

    Advice to Management

Possibly offer an extra week of vacation after the second year to help retain more employees long term. Also, contributing to a 401k based on years of service would also help retain employees

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Rational Enterprise (More than a year)

    Pros

Proximity to Stuyvesant Plaza and thruway
Some genuinely good people in all departments
Some genuinely good people in leadership/management roles (just 2 that I can think of)

    Cons

Where does one begin? The company lowballs just about everybody that isn't in a management position which is why they can't attract any new development. They are now outsourcing development to India and are using any developers foolish enough to take a job there as "handlers" for the off-shore teams. Developers make MUCH LESS here than anywhere else in the industry, while management makes boatloads of money. Anybody worth their salt who does come aboard with lofty ideals and a positive outlook quickly have this positivity crushed out of them and end up fleeing before long. There is no longer a CEO at the company. Now it is just run by... Who knows? The owner occasionally shows up to send management scurrying before going off to foresee the building of his yacht. This same management only accepts agreement and not critique of their actions which has sent the company further downhill. They have been firing more people than they hire and losing more clients than the can attract which makes a person think that the company has months rather than years of life left. They have also been giving "percentages of the sale" (the company's business model is to be sold to a bigger company to give any management that has a stake in the company a big payday) instead of bonuses to their own management which is a sign that they probably do not expect to get sold at this rate and it beats giving actual bonuses!

If you dig through the reviews of this company you will find some positive ones. They are almost certainly feeble attempts at managers (and the couple people who, whether by luck or whatever weird reason, have hung on for years and are actually valued [two people?]). One of the reviews was from the CFO... who was fired for reasons that were never made clear to anybody. Most decisions are made behind closed doors leaving everyone in the dark.

If you wish to work in a company where you are treated like a bothersome impediment and where they pinch pennies to forestall the inevitable while promoting sycophants then RE is the company for you!

    Advice to Management

It may be too late for advice. When management moves on to other companies, they may want to take everything they have done here and do the opposite.

I have been working at Rational Enterprise full-time

    Pros

Rational has a small software team (under 10 developers). This creates a good environment where developers aren't micromanaged and are allowed to do a good job. Management is open to suggestions for improvements and is always looking for ways they can improve. Previous management has been poor but things are improving greatly and Rational is turning into a great place to work

    Cons

If you aren't used to a saas software model, Rational might not be for you. Due to business , sometimes requirements change but things are getting better.
