I worked at Raytheon BBN Technologies

    Pros

    Great people and innovative company

    Cons

This was a long time ago but company was a bit beaurocratic. The pros outweighed the cons though, by a lot.

I have been working at Raytheon BBN Technologies full-time

    Pros

Exciting contract based research and development work with a long legacy of contributions to computer science and R&D.

    Cons

Last several years has had a continued erosion of culture and benefits due to Raytheon standardizing Raytheon practices onto BBN. It is hard to predict what it will look like in 5 years. Maybe it will look great to a new hire...

    Advice to Management

Focus on your star performers, one by one, to ensure they are as satisfied as possible. Meet with them individually and having an open discussion about their needs to be happy employees. Make it safe, and do all you can.

I worked at Raytheon BBN Technologies

    Pros

Amazing research and projects. Some people are really intelligent. Medium size company. Good to start career with.

    Cons

Lot of upper management and mentors leaving. Mostly dependant on defense related projects and single client. Things are changing though.

    Advice to Management

Be honest to employees and I know it's hard, but try to maintain the top level gurus and scientists .

I have been working at Raytheon BBN Technologies

    Pros

Get to work on a variety of technologies; chances to move between projects and groups to learn about new fields; top-notch people; good work/life balance

    Cons

Projects are driven by the needs of the customer (for the most part, the US Department of Defense) so the focus is often quite specific and not as "academic" as other labs; because a lot of the work is for the DoD (and some of it is classified) it can be hard to publish or collaborate with people outside the company due to export restrictions.

    Advice to Management

The acquisition of BBN by Raytheon may destroy BBN. The people who came to work at BBN chose to come to BBN instead of a company like Raytheon because they liked the small company, everyone-knows-everyone, low-bureacracy, no-nonsense, get-it-done environment. The more BBN becomes like Raytheon, the less reason there is for anyone to go to BBN; if you want to work for a company like Raytheon, you might as well go... work for Raytheon.

  8. "Good research environment"

I have been working at Raytheon BBN Technologies

    Pros

Focus on quality over speed. Interesting projects. Smart people. Private offices! BBN has a great reputation and it is largely deserved. The resources and tools are usually good.

    Cons

Government funding goes up and down. Some projects are driven top-down by visions that are not productive. The fit with parent company Raytheon can be awkward as Raytheon is more of a large manufacturer while BBN is more of a research company.
