    I worked at Raytheon full-time

    Pros

Big, after previous acquisitions and reorganizations, is working earnestly to be come "one company", though turf war among the divisions still exists.

    Cons

At least in my division (formerly Technical Services), jobs are really based on existing contracts. If your primary billable contract ends - so does your position. In all actuality, a "body shop". No future in IT - almost all was outsourced - very rare to find an IT person wearing a Raytheon Badge.

I have been working at Raytheon as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Like in most government related industries, the work is less intense and can be pretty slow paced. This means you don't have to work as hard at the actual "work" itself, compared to financial and healthcare related industries,

    Cons

Absolutly, without a doubt, the most terrible IT Management I have seen in 15 years of consulting... I have never seen such an nonfunctional department as the BAS group. The managers are never there... no one is ever reachable and there is no consequences for not returning emails, or not completing your work. Those that are considering Functional Consulting Roles here, stay away! Its a Revolving Door for Business Analysts and IT Project Managers.

    Advice to Management

There seems to be some sort of Policy to not fire bad mangers... they just get rotated somewhere else. The problem is their attitudes... the middle managers dont work and hide in their offices, adn seem to just get away with it. That isnt going to change, regardless of the area you put them under.

I worked at Raytheon (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They don't seem to fire incompetent employees

    Cons

Career advancement is slooooow unless you know someone

    Advice to Management

Don't stay in your office all of the time. verify what your directors tell you so you really know what is going on.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

    - The benefits are terrific
    - Corporate management is with it, and is trying to modernize (socially, procedurally) the company (see cons)

    Cons

    - Middle management is entrenched in the 1950's (processes, values, expectations) and is stifling change
    - "Be creative" communications that start positive at the top corporate levels are changed to "obey" instructions by the time they percolate down through management layers

    Advice to Management

Undertake a large effort to evaluate managers fit with the stated Raytheon values (not the practiced values) - clear house of the ones that don't share the company values

"Good place to have a long and stable career."

    Pros

Stability - one review I read said "once you are in, you're in." Good benefits package. Focus on work life balance with flex time, telecommute, etc. Caring management and strong sense of community. Plenty of support and time for learning. Good educational assistance program. Many lifers here as it is an easy place to put in a 30-40 year career.

    Cons

Not the most challenging place to work. Plenty of bureaucracy. Similar to working in a federal government organization. Still a sense of hierarchy and "putting in your service" in order to advance. Main business is weaponry - if that doesn't sit well with you it probably isn't a good fit. Lots of ex-military employees. Stability and predictability is paramount - ingenuity, innovation and risk taking are embraced in words but not in practice.

    Advice to Management

There are many hurdles to attracting young talent. The boring old company image will make it difficult if the job market becomes more competitive.

I have been working at Raytheon full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits and competitive compensation. Raytheon is a good company to work for. I have worked for Raytheon for 13 years.

    Cons

In the last few years the benefits are starting to be reduced. This is especially the case with health care due to the ACA.

    Advice to Management

Continue to look out for your employees. this has always been a good aspect to working for Raytheon and it should continue to be so.

    Pros

Focus on ethics, acceptance of diversity, good pay and benefits. Many different business units within the company allow for exploring different career options. Offer telecommuting for some jobs and flexible work schedules.

    Cons

Due to defense budget cuts, the business can be cyclical and have lay-offs.
