I worked at Razorfish (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Compensation and benefits as part of Publicis Groupe are excellent.

    Cons

This is a very large agency, with a fair amount of bureaucracy.

The agency market is changing dramatically, with so many clients moving work in-house. Razorfish will need to evolve if it is to survive. That evolution, especially given the recent Publicis Groupe acquisition of Sapient, will most assuredly include a large amount of offshore development. But that alone will not save the business.

    Advice to Management

What are Razorfish's core competencies? Why should a client invest in a partnership with them, vs. hiring a team internally? Top level management needs to have answers these questions if the company is going to survive.

I worked at Razorfish (Less than a year)

    Pros

You get to work on variety of clients. Of course, this is because Razorfish Commerce are one and done with the clients. Get exposure on how to deal with difficult client situations and upper management that have no clue on how to deliver projects successfully.

All in all, a good place to learn some technology, build skills on how to deal with difficult client situations and how not to implement a project.

    Cons

Razorfish Commerce are very much a sales oriented approach and will sell work 30-40% under the real estimate. The typical project will go into crisis mode about mid-way through the project. This is too far into the project for the client to pull out. The client will stay with the project until the first release and then kick Razorfish out and bring in a new partner. Upper management will not look at the estimates and not acknowledge any risks. Upper management in the Commerce division is very poor and should look for employment elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

The good upper management has recently left and the poor upper management left. Upper management is really promoted two levels past their competency level and should look to leave.

Needs a new office space to energize the teams
Needs a greater variety of clients

    Advice to Management

Needs more new clients, the staff are good, they just need some invigorating!

I have been working at Razorfish full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Your coworkers will be fabulous at Razorfish - they are really good at recruiting smart, interesting people. There are also good benefits in terms of time off (although it can often be hard to take all the time you are offered).

    Cons

Not all of the work is that interesting these days...and there are many late nights or intensely long weeks. It is rare to work less than 50 hours a week, and it is often much, much more.

    Pros

RF definitely respected and encouraged a work/life balance. The Atlanta office in particular was a great place to be.

    Cons

As with any company, there are people and processes that could use improvement. There were a few cases where one wonders, "How did they get to the position they're in?"

    Advice to Management

Get back to paying attention to how the employees are treated. It seems that in recent years, Director and VP level managers missed the mark on how to best treat employees. In a few departments, there was an enormous amount of stress and turn-over.

    Pros

There are always opportunities for new challenges and career advancement. I took the job because I wanted to be challenged professionally to do my best work. I got exactly what I wanted. I worked harder and was more stressed than ever before.

The people are fantastic, I've never worked with more intelligent, capable people.

    Cons

While there are always opportunities for career growth, there are also extreme workplace politics to contend with. Significant turnover in senior management over the last few years has resulted in there no longer being a cohesive strategy that brings employees and customers together in passion over the company's product. That said, there are a few bright spots in management who I'll always have respect for.

There is very little work/life balance. You are rewarded if you bend over backwards and give your all (meaning your personal life is put on the back burner).

    Advice to Management

Hire more experienced management to help you rebuild and restrategize the direction you want to take the company in. Some of you are great at what you do but just are not management material and that's okay. Just hire better managers and you'll reap the rewards.

    Pros

You get to work with very smart people.

    Cons

There is a circle of trust that you need to be part of... if you remove yourself from the politics, you will continue to do your job but never get any recognition (other than a $20 iTunes gift card), much less a promotion.

"Razorfish is an industry leader filled with the type of motivated people everyone loves to work with."

    Pros

Razorfish is a company committed to pushing the limits of digital marketing, giving employees the opportunity to pitch in on a variety of opportunities, and is filled with highly intelligent, committed and motivated folks who are a pleasure to work with.

    Cons

Razorfish does not have very well defined roles and performance metrics so differentiating oneself based on objective performance evaluation is challenging. Given the lack of structure, promotions can sometimes seem random or arbitrary which can lead to confusion and possibly dissatisfaction with motivated employees looking to "get ahead."

    Advice to Management

You have a company filled with very smart people at all levels of the company, who are committed to their team, their peers, their clients and this company. I would recommend having more consistent and open communication with folks "on the ground" to gain insights into ways the company can improve with project delivery, client communication and internal efficiencies. Placing your trust in the teams that make up the core of this company via transparent communication will yield quality feedback and increased commitment and investment by the Razorfish community.

    Pros

The people. Bright, intelligent, fun to work with. I also feel that the company as a whole cares about it's employees and wants everyone to have a healthy work/life balance. My experience has been that my boss and the upper management really care about me and want me to grow. They seem to understand that the company grows as the employee grows. Everyone wants to do a great job for the client and the clients seem to sense that as well.

    Cons

Travel, but I knew this when I took the job. Depending on project and location of travel, one can usually expect to travel a good deal (50%-75% has been my experience). The company is very good about placing people on projects with less travel if they know they want to.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and let's make it through this economy.
