I worked at RealNetworks full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits that got progressively worse with time

    Cons

The leader of this company has frittered away their initially brilliant technology, squandered $600 million from the Microsoft settlement and run off some extremely talented senior people through his megalomaniac style and unwillingness to listen to any rational ideas about how to market some decent ideas after the RealPlayer lost it's steam. An incredible waste of what was the best technology to change the internet in the 1990s and early 2000s.

    Advice to Management

    Run.

    Pros

The industries the company serves are interesting and dynamic. The CEO is open to new ideas.

    Cons

A depressing environment because of repeated lay-offs and cut backs in spending

I have been working at RealNetworks full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1. Nice people. Cool environment.
    2. Work on new technologies.
    3. Nice HR.
    4. Opportunities to grow.
    5. Great work life balance.

    Cons

    1. Don't have a competitive product. Make innovative product and earn money.
    2. Less benefits and compensation.
    3. Lots of talented people here. Not tapping their talent.
    4. Won't recommend to fresh grads.
    5. Lots of layoff happens.

    Advice to Management

Executives have made their efforts and what's the result? An noncompetitive product and quarterly loss every time. Lets make it a group effort and include developers input more. Think out of box. The company could have been a Netflix long time back.

I have been working at RealNetworks (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart people. Tons of free time and paid time off.

    Cons

The medium level manager structure is too big. You have tons of managers that do not make smart decisions or any work at all. There is not a properly defined road map, product or strategy.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and create a new road map

    Pros

    1. Learned a lot of new technologies very quickly
    2. Great work-life balance, lots of PTO
    3. Good café and office, with gym, parking deck, lots of eating options close-by

    Cons

    1. Senior management seemed inept
    2. Lack of direction, no clear focus
    3. Serious lack of good product ideas
    4. The doers are there, but they're not given importance
    5. Employee morale is on the lower side, quite some negativity in the air

    Advice to Management

Re-focus, find some great new products to build.

I have been working at RealNetworks full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In Seattle, flexible schedule, no pigeon-holing - freedom to learn new things and solve problems

    Cons

SoDo is a horrible in-city commute with all the construction; the bldg is awful; never should have hired Rob back; Sr. leaders (in Gamehouse) seem really vacant and detached from the people on their teams. No team-building. Culture has drifted into a really weird place - survivor's mentality, no diversity, org structure has teams and functions at odds.

    Advice to Management

    Sell it.

I worked at RealNetworks (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Many good, dedicated, smart people, great location and cafe at the time - they have moved since I worked there - lots of flexibility and autonomy.

    Cons

Too many burned out cycles chasing new things that never come to fruition. Fear management, keep your head down.

    Advice to Management

Organize, be deliberate, know whats going on downstream.

I worked at RealNetworks full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great mid level and lower executive management teams while I was there. Smart people who want to achieve results but all kowtow to the CEO's whims

    Cons

No one wants to work for or with the CEO. He seems to hear only what he wants to hear and his pulse on the industry is, imo, significantly off. The strategy is outdated and out of touch with reality. So much good money was thrown after bad that it's comical and should be an embarrassment.

    Advice to Management

Sell the assets and give the shareholders their final return. As long as Rob G is running the show there is little hope.
