I worked at Recovery School District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Collaborative administration and ops managers make the job easier and better able to accommodate students who are ill or injured. Flexible schedule with days off when students are off, like school holidays. Lots of pre-service prep and education for the faculty and the School Nurse is included. The relationships you build with the students is a major plus here! Hugs are free and you have the opportunity to be a change agent for many at risk youths.

    Cons

Some principals second guess the nurse's decisions, but if you have policy to back your decision, it helps them to understand why you made it. No one on staff is as concerned about your license to practice as you are. This is why it's important to advise why you are doing what you're doing. Teaching what a School Nurse does is so important for the staff because many people think all School Nurses do is band aids and ice. These jobs pay less than regular nursing jobs, which is unfortunate because there is so much responsibility.

    Advice to Management

Believe in your School Nurse and support her in any way you can.

I worked at Recovery School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Organization and its leaders put students first; mission-driven; really enjoyed, appreciated, and learned from both my supervisors and my peers. Truly innovative work to reduce the opportunity gap and achievement gap for students. Opportunity to have a significant meaningful impact on Louisiana students and families.

    Cons

Cons for some individuals, depending on your preferences - work is very fast-paced, often unexpected challenges coming up, requires a great deal of flexibility and degree of comfort with not always having firm structures. Many (but not all) positions require wearing multiple hats because it's a lean office.

    Advice to Management

At least when I was there, I think that communication from leadership to employees could have been improved. I think that leaders had/have a work style preference that prioritized, at times, efficiency and urgency over process, and this can sometimes have a negative impact on culture.

I have been working at Recovery School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You can have some good stories afterwards, but that's about it. Everything about this place is horrifying.

    Cons

The kids are nuts, the principals are scoundrels, and nothing works the way it should. You will find yourself continually overworked and stressed.

    Advice to Management

The compensation was good, but there needs to be major overhauls of the area in order to change some of these issues.

I have been working at Recovery School District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The best aspect of the job is the students. The students make the job worth getting up early in the morning and staying late in the afternoon.

    Cons

Leadership, employee turnover, pay, constant leadership philosophy change, frequent curriculum changes, emphasis on testing, emphasis on data and lack of technology.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees by communicating with them and paying them fairly.

I worked at Recovery School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The students are lively, humorous and lovable.

    Cons

Exceedingly low student achievement, limited resources, long hours and extended school days/years, no consequences for absenteeism, unrealistic expectations of teachers, continual band-aid solutions to root problems (i.e. providing "a laptop per student" when students cannot read), poor staff support, constantly changing policies, and corrupt district bureaucracy.
