Cons
  • The leadership seems to make open source a marketing gimmick to sell books (in 62 reviews)

  • More importantly at least for me: The amazing culture and work life balance more than made up for any doller that I might have been sacrificing (in 22 reviews)

I worked at Red Hat as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Red Hat has an excellent university internship program in Canada. Internships last 8-14 months, which is enough time to accomplish significant things if you take initiative.

    - Engineers working on a _very wide_ variety of systems software and developer tools. Lots to learn if you look around & take initiative in talking to people.
    - Opportunity to get familiar with open source culture and development process.
    - Relatively generous policy for working from home (wfh).

    Cons

    - Need to be prepared to work with remote teams over IRC + mailing lists.
    - Company culture is a bit bland, if you're looking for a 'fun' office like what Google is famous for this ain't it.

    Advice to Management

The following feedback is based on circumstances as of 2013, so things might already be better.

The internship experience could be much improved with respect to the learning interns do about technologies not related to their primary area of responsibility. During my internship, interns were able/encouraged to take an RHCSA/RHCE certification, however that course covers fairly basic Linux sysadmin topics that are either familiar to most people or accessible through a modicum of Googling, and the resulting credential expires relatively soon anyways.

Having interns instead spend 2 weeks to a month of the internship learning about more recent technologies (such as containerized systems, Docker/Kubernetes/OpenShift) would be far more useful even if it does not confer a credential. It would also provide interns with a better picture about Red Hat's more recent business strategy.

I worked at Red Hat as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Red Hat provides its employees with a great working environment. In general, the people are very friendly and there is a strong sense of community within the company. The compensation and benefits are competitive. They are very flexible and are supportive in helping you balance your home and work life. I was pleasantly surprised by how interns are treated as regular employees.

    Cons

A lot of the products that are developed do not directly bring profit to the company.

I have been working at Red Hat full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Solid products and an excellent technical team to help build and support the sales efforts.

    Cons

Compensation is in the middle to low range - open source is not as popular in Canada as it is in the US so your commission is going to suffer. Canadian operation has not had anywhere near the same level of success as the US. The Canadian Sales Management team is disappointing at best..

    Advice to Management

I hate to say it but the US should take over management of the Canadian Operation. Morale is very low under the current Executive.
