I have been working at Red Hat full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Coming from closed source software companies and very large matrixes organizations, I have been thoroughly happy at Red Hat for almost 3 years now.

Red Hat, an open source software company, brings the open source philosophy into the organization across all teams and levels. Open dialogue is COMPLETELY supported, encouraged and almost never penalized.

Your ideas are always welcomed with rewards based on Meritocracy. This is very refreshing as a middle line employee.

    Cons

Compensation tends to be about 10-20% lower than comparable positions within comparable types or companies.

I have been working at Red Hat (Less than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful people, excellent support staff, great benefits and work/life balance, spectacular offices, and the worldwide network of Red Hat offices really make you feel like you're a part of a healthy organization.

    Cons

My initial manager wasn't great, but he moved onto a different position and I am much happier with my new manager. Being a consultant is a very travel-heavy job and that was EXTREMELY exhausting to me at first but I eventually adapted.

I have been working at Red Hat full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    • Unique culture focused on meritocracy
    • Overall the people Red Hat hires are outstanding
    • Great Benefits
    • Vacation policy is generous for new employees
    • A lot of growth potential
    • Jim Whitehurst

    Cons

    • Sales org isn't tied to the culture like the rest of the company is (could be a pro for some)
    • Working as an HR recruiter is very brutal from what I've seen, wouldn't reccomend going into that part of the company.
    • A lot of growing pains from increasing the workforce so fast.

    Advice to Management

Keep hiring good people who won't just nickel and dime the business to reward shareholders. So far that hasn't been the case, but there was a worry among a lot of the employees with what the CFO (now former CFO) would do. For the next CFO, I think it would be beneficial to make the hiring process more extensive to make sure the candidate selected will fit into the culture of the company well. I would also reccomend not having IT under the control of the next CFO.

I have been working at Red Hat as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I honestly believe that Red Hat is an amazing place to work. Everyone is dedicated to their jobs and they have, in my opinion perfected a culture in which people are welcome to contribute at any level. Even as an intern, I knew that my opinions were being heard. I was definitely enamored by the work culture and feel that the company is full of incredibly intelligent people.

    Cons

Sometimes the company can seem a little disorganized in the sense that teams are not segmented very neatly. It can sometimes be confusing as to who needs to do what (at least in the Customer Experience and Engagement Department).

    Advice to Management

I think adding a sprinkle of more structure would help make the company more organized and more efficient
