Pros
Great and fun people throughout the company nationally and locally. Awesome support being given transaction coordinators and tour coordinators. Steady paycheck not found at a traditional brokerage plus 'bonus' pay that includes receiving a part of the commission at the closing they just call it bonus pay. We can offer our customers things no other brokerage can offer. I could not afford to pay people for the support I receive at Redfin if I was still at a large brokerage as I was.
Cons
People must be wanting to work full time and be ready to work many hours as is necessary for anyone building a career in real estate. It is not the place for part time agents. If agents want to work part time we do have independent contractors who work as our Associates to help us with showings/tours. We so appreciate that they help our customers be served when we are otherwise booked.

Same as Traditional Agent without the Commission
Feb 6, 2014 - Agent in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
You will receive medical benefits.
Cons
Don't know what goes on at the Seattle Headquarters but locally the managers are simply people who have been there the longest--they have no experience in managing people. Redfin is now based on the traditional agent model where the agent will need to see the client through entire transaction--without the commission. You will likely have 30 clients to manage in the 2014 market.

fun and challenging place to work
Nov 12, 2014 - Intern in Seattle, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
People are really friendly and super smart. Culture promotes creativity and team work. Catered lunches and all the snacks you could want. Everyone eats lunch with each other and that allows you to meet a lot of people you normally wouldn't interact with.
Cons
You really have to work hard and I think some people had too much on their plate.

You'll drink the Koolaid till it drowns you.

Leads generated by website; health benefits & expenses reimbursed. Some really good people trying to make this a great place to work. Too bad they're in the minority.
Cons
No work life balance. Work 70-80 hrs/wk to earn less than $100k/yr. Too many managers promoted without the knowledge and experience to be successful leaders. People at top too narcissistic and condescending. Company culture was very good early on but disappeared as company grew and people were promoted without the experience necessary for their new roles.

Feels good to be a part of this

I love that what I do here and my input actually makes a difference. Management listens. The people are very intelligent and fun to work with. I would join a cult if Glen Kelman was the leader.
Cons
There's often a gap in communication between HQ and the field that causes confusion from time to time.

Biases plays a major role in the culture of Redfin.
Jul 14, 2018 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
IMO none except free coffee and snacks, occasionally free lunch.
Cons
Inexperienced staff that knows nothing about HR issues, handling employees appropriately, employee rights, relations etc. Bringing their biases when it comes to recruiting, screening and interviewing. Being black can be uncomfortable at Redfin due to the culture. The majority of agents are white and not use to working with black people professionally or as buyers or sellers. Some neighborhoods were excluded because it was majority black homeowners and white agents did not want to work those neighborhoods even though houses are priced upwards of $450,000 plus. Many markets do not even have black senior agents. Shameful in a big city full of black realtors. Blacks are hired in subordinate positions in some cases while newly licensed white agents were made senior agents immediately because they had friends on the inside.

Pep Rallies That Expect You To Do More for Free
Apr 15, 2022 - Tour CoordinatorRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Pre-pandemic. The office culture had a spark to it. We also had weekly catered lunch, a gym to use downstairs. The staff had a lot more energy and vibrancy. Work from home options, other perks, commuter benefits if you live in a city with public transportation (I think they may have stopped that altogether) There are some legitimate good people but honestly those are the ones that Redfin will or already have alienated.
Cons
Management puts on pep rally shows and pressures people to start cheering via Zoom and in person. It creates the culture that you have to be the loudest on the megaphone to get incremental raises and position upgrades. They expect you to take on free additional labor and without any guarantee of future compensation or position upgrades (e.g. training new staff, helping out other markets, presentations, DEI-related stories that benefit the company and virtue signal but not pay honorariums for). And if you're position is upgraded, the pay is meager and not representative of the grander expectations that they have for the role. The cheerleading culture is not only reductive, but it is also toxic especially when it disregards people's current lived experiences (e.g. inflation, economic circumstances, or the mere fact that we have lost loved ones or struggled through Covid). You have unhappy agents who are severely underpaid and struggled during Covid and are moving on to better brokerages. You have managers who are burned out and dealing with unhappy team members.

As enticing as they look, do yourself a favor and stay away
Feb 28, 2023 - Listing Concierge in Seattle, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Coworkers were good people. Remote working opportunity was great.
Cons
Unfortunately Redfin layoffs people when times get tough and rehires for those same roles less than 3-1/2 months later. What respectable employer does that? Leadership doesn't listen to employee feedback. Systems & processes in place to do the work were lacking and inherently flawed. Strong emphasis on dealing with change but I never saw change that was focused on improvement. Many people in leadership positions who had no business being in those roles. Compensation was well below market levels.

Great company to work for with plenty of career advancement opportunities
Jun 15, 2016 - Buyside Agent in Houston, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Redfin is a fantastic company to work for, for many reasons. You are not just automatically hired on like traditional brokerages, you must interview. This is a great thing because they really care about the team dynamic and quality of people. There is also a great referral program! Management takes the time to help the whole team; they are always available if you have a question, or to lend an ear and you always have your entire team to turn to as well. Training schedules are setup for those who wish to attend (AA's and agents), and you are constantly learning. Redfin likes to promote from within; if you are looking for a place to learn, grow and advance - you've found it! Great team and company spirit. Technology that is like no other.
Cons
No complaints to be honest, other than it can sometimes be overwhelming when you are first learning.

Pros
I was part of the recent layoff, which was disappointing, but I'm grateful to have worked for Redfin. It's filled with wonderful people who genuinely care about each other's wellbeing and the customers they serve.
Cons
Pay and 401k plan could be better.
