    Pros

The only pro i feel i can give is that the benefits are great, but they do that for a reason i can only assume...

    Cons

Micromanagement & lack of knowledge in senior management. Lots of resistance from ill-informed long term employees who are incredibly selfish. This company has been going down the pan for about 4 years and led me to feel very ill mentally due to poor treatment by my direct management. Apply at your peril - prospects and peoples attitudes are terminally poor.

    Pros

*Generous study package. Financial support is given to pursue accountancy qualification (ACCA or CIMA) *29 days annual leave BUT there are many restrictions on when you can use it *Easy to commute and is very close to Sutton rail station

    Cons

*Pressure to sit multiple accountancy exams in one sitting *Narrow scope of role makes it hard to achieve the skills needed to become an accomplished accountant *Scope also makes it difficult to achieve sign-off for relevant accountancy qualification. This is especially surprising considering the company’s ACCA platinum status *Lack of opportunities for career progression *Salary is extremely low in comparison to similar roles elsewhere *Expected to frequently work late nights which makes it hard to achieve a good work life balance *Senior management are very old fashioned and have poor communication skills *Work social events are few and far between *Office space is in desperate need of modernisation

    Pros

There are some really talented IT bods... and nice people to work with. Technology is moving in the right direction.

    Cons

However, the mentality within the company has not moved forward amongst some of the long serving workers. Position progression is not based on skills or merely the willingness to learn but if you are liked by management / you belong to/hang with a "select group" or you are a "yes sir 3 bags for sir" kind of person then progress is guaranteed. Managers are not proactive and seem to be sleeping on their job most of the time and on cruise control to secure their generous pension. Most solutions to The real problems are only tackled when someone in senior management makes enough noise about it, very quick to please those who have been in the company longest, self preservation is a cultural objective whilst the true issues in the infrastructure are swept under the carpet. If you dear stand up and talk about it you will get ousted in the process with plots to get you out in some shape or another.

I worked at Reed Business Information

    Pros

There are some very talented people, especially among the middle to senior ranks, who are fun to work with. Some interesting brands and products in the portfolio. Generous annual leave.

    Cons

    - Too many long-standing people who are senior because they've been there for so long, rather than because they're good. - Very political and siloed. - Old-fashioned senior management team who've not had experience in other companies and aren't open to new idea. - Poor pay.

"Central sales - good for a graduate for 6 months, but not recommended for anybody else"

I worked at Reed Business Information full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

A great atmosphere in the pub after work on a Friday night, lots of banter. Good pension scheme. 29 days holiday. Shares scheme. Good training for a complete newbie to sales. Some good treats to be won for those in the right roles (lunch of the month, vouchers etc). Lots of events to attend (good if you enjoy these things!).

    Cons

Firstly your potential opportunities within central sales and your ability to progress your career highly depend on which brand you are put on when you first start which is a lottery. If your brand is doing well at the time then you are able to look like a super star and ride the wave of glory. However if your brand is under performing, management refuse to see any outside influences (eg your direct competitor is delivering a better product for half the price) and blame your ability as a sales person. If you/your brand does well for more than 12 months your targets will shoot up - "Oh you went 20% over annual target for the last 12 months, we'll increase your target by another 20% ON TOP of that - the market is obviously booming..." There's a long career ladder to follow which is often based on time at the company rather than talent (you're not going anywhere fast in central sales): Telesales exec - This is the entry level job title given to new hires (usually graduates). No commission in your first 3 months so don't go crazy! Senior Telesales exec - Exactly the same role as Telesales exec but you might be paid a few extra grand. This role is usually given to people after they've been with the company for 8-18 months. Key Account Exec - A mixture of field/telesales. Pay increase and added bonus of £4k car allowance and you can expense your parking. Usually given to you after a 1-2 years as senior telesales exec Key Account Manager (KAM) - Same role as Key Account Manager but sometimes you will need to step into sales manager's shoes when they are absent/delegating. Usually given after 1 year as Key account Exec. Sales Manager - Now you've hit the big time! You still have all the pressures of a KAM, but now you have your entire day full with pointless meetings making it very hard to actually do any work. You also get to attend a weekly managers meeting with the sales director where you get to gossip about the rest of the sales staff! "Exec team" - Senior management who manage the managers.... Nobody's too sure what they do, but they look damn fine doing it. Pointing out realities is deeply frowned upon and if you try to explain why something isn't working you are branded as having a "negative attitude" which will take at least 6 months of brown nosing to shake off. KPI's are set for the whole floor regardless of which brand you work on or your role. If you work on a small market it can be tricky to find enough people to call every day - therefore you end up making pointless calls in order to hit your KPI targets (commission is docked if you do not make enough calls, regardless of how much revenue you generated). Work/life balance can be a bit ridiculous whilsy you're Key Account Exec/KAM and Sales Manager. There are lots of agency drinks/awards to attend and you are expected to stay at all of them until late. These can be fun but can also get in the way of having a real social life sometimes.

I have been working at Reed Business Information full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Generous annual leave (28 days per year and good hours (typically 9am-5pm). As a first job you will learn a lot about the world of work and are given extensive training. As this is a large company and often with large teams you will have the opportunity to meet a large pool of people and enjoy a team atmosphere, with frequent nights out and numerous partied throughout the year. The money varies but can be good, depending on your role.

    Cons

The constant pressure to perform and succeed can be a positive thing but not when mixed in with serious hypocrisies from the management and executive (i.e. we want you to make as much money as possible and then capping your bonus). Furthermore a gossipy atmosphere can exist where if you are not favoured at executive level, it probably won't be too long until you're out of the door. As a result staff can feel a constant need to be favoured and adored by senior management leading to a toxic atmosphere and baiting between lower tiered colleagues.

    Pros

Reed Business Information treats their employees well. The benefits are great. Many employee have work here for years. RBI takes care of their employees.

    Cons

The company is currently up for sale. I don't feel that the senior management has handled it in the best way. Information about it has not been very forth coming and has been very criptic .
