Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

Used to be such a special place

    Pros

It seemed like Ziff Media Group truly understood the company mission. But it didn't.

    Cons

The company has gone completely downhill since being acquired by Ziff Media Group. Seems like they don't know what to do with the company now that it's theirs. It's more just a way to publish ads at this point. When it used to be an actual Brand.

    great for career growth, but...

Apr 12, 2022 - Software Engineer in London, England
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Career growth is and has always been huge at RMN. there's always new things to learn if you're willing to take on challenges - Real flexibility to work on whatever you want. RMN is transparent to all of its engineers on what the company is doing, and if you see something you like, it's easy to work with your manager to contribute to it - Collaboration within the engineering org is really good. there's a lot of transparency between eng managers and ICs - Awesome office space, if only we weren't all working remotely

    Cons

    - Acquired by J2 last year. this was a positive for a short while, but the oldschool culture is dominating the fun environment RMN used to have - New bureaucratic leadership decisions make project inception incredibly challenging

Ain’t what it used to be

Nov 17, 2021 - Anonymous Employee in Austin, TX
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Depending on the department, pay is competitive and overall benefits are standard for tech, better than the average job outside of it. Upper management can be very transparent which is a breath of fresh air compared to previous companies.

    Cons

This is a completely different company from the one I joined in 2017. I used to say I would never leave, and if the org hadn’t been through so many acquisitions I would definitely still be there. The integrations with Harland Clarke and Ziff Davis took away so much of what made this place special. Turnover is so high I barely knew anyone by the time I left. So sad to see from a company that had incredible employee retention. Hiring got to be so slow as well, if anyone on your team (or even your manager!) left you would be expected to take on their work without additional pay or a promotion. This company is slowly wearing its employees down. The new management is difficult to please and often asks for unimportant work to be prioritized over necessary maintenance and progress. I had extremely negative interactions with new management being closed to feedback and dismissing ideas and historical knowledge from tenured employees, assuming they know more.

    Pros

-People are great and there is an actual sense of community. -They do commit to a diverse and inclusive environment.

    Cons

-Pay is low no matter the level of work you're putting in. -All solutions are expected to come from the bottom up while higher level employees provide little help or insight. -High turnover. -There is no room for growth. Management is completely indifferent to your success. -No transparency.
