I worked at Retro Studios full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Great location if you love Austin. Competitive salary and benefits. Creative team is second to none. Allowed (or perceived) freedom to work through design issues and art solutions. Fun team that’s very collaborative.

    Cons

Some questionable project management. Sometimes communication comes to a grinding halt and deadlines can become either unreasonable, really fluid, or completely change for the most bizarre reasons. In-house engine can be a challenge to work with.

    Advice to Management

Start a blog for the concept art team to post their in house personal stuff. Be more communicative with over-arching goals for the company and where you want to be with your games.

      Cons

-Poor Communication -4 or 3 cancelled games that was in a development cycle for Wii U. -Some developers were rushing on a game for a Wii U title that was cancelled. -Made terrible decisions -Unclear direction -Some developers were laid off for reasons -Passive-aggressive leadership -Poor Management

      Advice to Management

There was a cancelled game on Switch that was in Development since 2015 but was later cancelled in September 2018. It was meant to be a racing game based on Star Fox.

I have been working at Retro Studios full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

You get to be a part of the Nintendo family. Consistent paycheck.

      Cons

Upper-management is seemingly unwilling to seek out help in areas where they are ill-equipped. The Peter Principle is apparent throughout most departments. Unpaid overtime. Little to no empowerment.

      Advice to Management

Radically increase transparency. Add systems to enforce accountability of upper-management. Ask for help and be open to constructive criticism.

      Pros

-Good benefits -Decent pay -Friendly co-workers -Excellent HR team -Stable

      Cons

-Passive-aggressive leadership -the company as a whole is "stuck in the past" (making retro a very fitting name) and would rather do things the way they always have -Poor communication -Unclear direction -Difficult to move up -A lot of the talent Retro is known for left years ago

      Advice to Management

Make sure your team is capable of performing the duties listed in their job description

I have been working at Retro Studios

        Pros

Retro is a nice place to work, it's very busy working on multiple games. I'm sad leave for family reasons!

        Cons

Too many projects cooking at once, quality seems to be suffering.

        Advice to Management

Next time you're asked to work on 3 different racing games at once, don't say yes.

        I worked at Retro Studios

        Pros

Stable; owned by Nintendo Good compensation

        Cons

Retro is a shadow of its former self. The company made terrible decisions after the Metroid Prime games. It used to have some of the best talent in the industry, and it still has a lot of good artists, but it lost almost all of its top-tier engineering and design talent after Metroid Prime 3 while bringing on a lot of people who never should have been hired. It didn't value its talent highly enough and now it's paying...
