I worked at Retro Studios full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great location if you love Austin. Competitive salary and benefits. Creative team is second to none. Allowed (or perceived) freedom to work through design issues and art solutions. Fun team that’s very collaborative.

    Cons

Some questionable project management. Sometimes communication comes to a grinding halt and deadlines can become either unreasonable, really fluid, or completely change for the most bizarre reasons. In-house engine can be a challenge to work with.

    Advice to Management

Start a blog for the concept art team to post their in house personal stuff. Be more communicative with over-arching goals for the company and where you want to be with your games.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Retro Studios as an intern (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Long time studio
    Owned by nintendo

    Cons

They are all but shutting down, the management doesn't know crap about gaming other than the CEO, and they are ordered by nintendo that if by 2019 they don't Begin putting lootboxes and microtransactions, they are gonna shut them down, the hero here is the CEO, who fruitlessly tries to convince ninty otherwise, and yes this is not easy or konami but nintendo

    Advice to Management

    Please stop your shady crap

I have been working at Retro Studios full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You get to be a part of the Nintendo family.
    Consistent paycheck.

    Cons

Upper-management is seemingly unwilling to seek out help in areas where they are ill-equipped. The Peter Principle is apparent throughout most departments.
    Unpaid overtime.
    Little to no empowerment.

    Advice to Management

    Radically increase transparency.
Add systems to enforce accountability of upper-management.
Ask for help and be open to constructive criticism.

    Pros

Retro is a nice place to work, it's very busy working on multiple games. I'm sad leave for family reasons!

    Cons

Too many projects cooking at once, quality seems to be suffering.

    Advice to Management

Next time you're asked to work on 3 different racing games at once, don't say yes.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

    Stable; owned by Nintendo
    Good compensation

    Cons

Retro is a shadow of its former self. The company made terrible decisions after the Metroid Prime games. It used to have some of the best talent in the industry, and it still has a lot of good artists, but it lost almost all of its top-tier engineering and design talent after Metroid Prime 3 while bringing on a lot of people who never should have been hired. It didn't value its talent highly enough and now it's paying the price, and the management doesn't know how to rebuild a team half as good as what it used to have.
