I worked at Riney as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's a friendly, casual bunch of talented employees. Riney has gone through downsizing in the past, and the team here seem to be trying to get the rebound momentum going. Since it's a small shop, there's some room to establish processes and create the systems you'd like. It's a relaxed atmosphere. No one breathing down your neck, counting the hours you are in the office. Great views of the San Francisco Bay and a great neighborhood to go for a lunchtime stroll.

    Cons

It's a small shop in a big office -- last I counted, about 15 full-time staff members. More empty desks then occupied, which feels a little eery. It's an odd combo of small agency in a large umbrella company. For example, IT requests are routed through the East Coast and seem to take days. While it's a great bunch of employees, Riney leadership seems out-of-touch and misguided. Employee morale seems low. Lack of communication from Riney management. There's a very strong personality in Riney leadership that greatly affects the mood and atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

Increase communication from management to employees. Do careful research with employees before implementing "fixes."

    Pros

Fun, creative atmosphere. Some very hardworking folks who care very much about the creative work and the final product. Kristi Vandenbosch is a fantastic leader who is really taking the place somewhere great.

    Cons

Very disorganized, lost all its cache once Hal left and was nearly run into the ground by recent CEOs, like KF.

    Advice to Management

Keep using the holding company to your advantage.

    Pros

Very laid back, focused on fun and team development. Had employee-thrown gatherings almost every week. Hard working creative bunch. Good integration between departments and some great creative work.

    Cons

Unstable - lost clients and had to go through many layoffs. Was transitioning from being a midsize to small agency so some pain associated with that

    Advice to Management

Finding a new voice for the agency is imperative.

I worked at Riney full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice work environment. Great group of folks. Started going downhill after merger with Modem as Riney lost all their clients. Too bad, it was a great place to work.

    Cons

Current management. Also being part of a holding company has many issues especially when trying to build up a client base and forced to meet profit expectations at the same time. No investment in talent.

I worked at Riney full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They need all the help they can get, so your compensation will be higher than it should be.

    Cons

Only a very, very superficial understanding of the digital universe. Leadership that has no experience of leading a small office without the support of big infrastructure. Very poor and heavy handed management from NY and Paris. No respect for life beyond your service to the company. Do not keep to their commitments. Highly political, short sighted and untrustworthy as an employer.

    Advice to Management

Stop paying big money for big names that don't know how to operate in a small office that also don't have the revenue to support them. Start building a business with people that know how to start from the beginning again and that are happy to be rewarded for performance rather than the legacy of their reputation. Then, just once, keep to your commitments.

I worked at Riney full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    • Nice people, nice building
    • Excellent view
    • Work from home
    • Summer Fridays
    • (Used to?) have plenty of money/backing from Publicis
    • Ben Riney works there

    Cons

    • Run by the planning department
    • Extended track record of no new biz wins
    • Senior management heavy
    • Laid off the wrong people, repeatedly
    • Building is cursed

    Advice to Management

Get your act together and start fresh, across the board. The recent ECD/CEO changes were good (hopefully not too late), but they need to replace whoever is in charge of new biz pitches and make the shop creative-driven again.
