I have been working at Rio Tinto full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Rio has a very strong safety culture and for the size of company they work very hard to take care of all of the employees

    Cons

With a company this large it is almost impossible to avoid corporate politics. While it certainly exists, I think Rio makes an effort to avoid it or mitigate the negative consequences as much as possible.

I worked at Rio Tinto as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Tons of opportunity to learn because of all the resources available with such a large company. Great internship experience including both hands on and data driven engineering experience. Great checks and balances system build into project approval process.

    Cons

Extremely bureaucratic. If your are doing anything, you are filling out paperwork beforehand.

I worked at Rio Tinto full-time

    Pros

Excellent culture, though lately has been move to Australia centric culture. Highly interesting roles and career opportunities, if you are open to travel and/or relocation. Highly competitive pay structure

    Cons

No work life balance, especially if you are not Australian based. Significant amount of travel and highly stressful

    Advice to Management

Should develop more inclusive culture. Line manager has too much power and control with little escalation mechanism

I have been working at Rio Tinto (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very good pay and benefits, focused on safety, world-wide company, many locations. Great people and a lot of history which made it fun.

    Cons

Rio Tinto is currently trying to cut costs and appears to not have a good idea of just how to do it. They appear to be making a lot of knee-jerk reactions there is a lot of re-organization and layoffs happening. My position was one of those eliminated positions, I understand the need to cut costs but some sites will begin to suffer with lack of support from the global monster that is RioTinto.

    Advice to Management

Please map out a strategy and stick to it for more than 6 months. The constant re-orgs get old and make for a not-so-pleasant working environment.
