    Pros

Great people in the London office
Work hours are driven by your projects rather than a culture of standard work day
    Central location
    Relatively good pay
Promising market position in cat modeling

    Cons

All the problems in this company boil down to the culture set by the CEO, which is to go along with the agenda or get fired. This means that senior leaders are discouraged from disagreeing, and they pass that mindset down to the teams. There is a lot of politics and it takes months to get even the simplest things accomplished. Many of the people that I know of are working at 50% capacity at best, because there is too much clutter to get on with anything. The company does not provide a lot of professional development opportunity unless you work on the models team, so don't expect a promotion any time soon.

    Advice to Management

Get a CEO that can take this company to the next level.

    Pros

    RMS is a very different company to what I was used to. I always worked for the big companies i.e. Royal Dutch Shell, Goldman Sachs and Willis Towers Watson. For me the benefits have been vast;

    1. It is a large small company. The DNA of the start up is still there at RMS but it is now 1,000 employees strong, hence no longer a small company. But by no means a corporate machine. The benefit is, your contributions are noticed and valued. This means when you perform, you will be rewarded.

    2. Management knows the people who work in the office, or at least it feels like they want to know you. This means you feel like you are considered in the daily choices that are made.

    3. There is also a much better atmosphere i.e. it is much less formal in the office. Therefore it is more open and therefore a better place to work. i.e. it is not a formal stiff political atmosphere.

    4. The space of Catastrophe management is evolving significantly and while the environment of actuarial modeling on the Life and Non-Life is becoming simpler (or less innovation), the Cat Risk environment is still evolving fast, hence there is a robust future growth potential which secures your role and the company. Naturally if the company executes its commercial strategy correctly, but this is definitely being done right at this point.

    5. And if you feel you want to do something else, even someone like me who has historically focused on sales, can even move to a CAT modeling role. The organization is very flexible and they prefer keeping good people in a different role than loose them. And given the DNA of the company i.e. smaller and far less political, they are capable really opening up to such requests.

    Cons

So far is see no real cons. The only 1 would be turnover but I see this more as an extension of the RMS success i.e.

    1. It is a successful start up, so I have seen people leave to join a start up really at the start of their evolution. My view, RMS has given these people an example of what is possible so they also want to achieve that. However many have come into this business from university and perhaps have not witnessed the realities of working live. We therefor also see quite a few "boomerangs" (people who come back).

    2. There are quite a few people who learn the systems and the trade at RMS and then penetrate the insurance industry itself. And given the strong reputation of RMS the people are in demand.

    Pros

RMS is full of smart people, and a great place to work. It's a large enough organization so you can move around geographically and/or professionally. They're a market leader with a best of breed product.

    Cons

Work/life balance is a challenge. There are a lot of politics and people moving in and out of senior positions constantly.

    Pros

I joined RMS right out of grad school and I'd never had a corporate job prior to that. I learned a lot from RMS about many different roles, and that's why RMS is a great company for that - roles are very loosely defined and often people are given a role that they do not know how to perform. From that you can learn not only how not to conduct yourself, but also how to avoid working with such individuals in the future.

    Cons

It's tedious, and takes a long time to get through, but once you do, it's a lightbulb moment.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. It's working!

    Pros

Very smart people and a good entrepreneurial atmosphere (in certain teams) made this a great place to work. You're generally left to your own devices to get on with your job which is great for self-starters and for those who know the industry.

    Cons

The management however seem to have a "continuous re-org" complex and some of the decisions made of the past 5 years have been highly questionable - particularly in terms of technology and senior management hiring. This seems to be on the right track with newer leaders but yet to be seen.

    Advice to Management

Avoid gravitating to the technology "du jour" and avoid spinning the future product suite as the "mutt's nuts" while it's still vapourware. Let's build something and then let's go and try to change the market.

    Pros

diverse work and colleagues, there are good chances to learn new things, some have nice exposure to the insurance industry

    Cons

innovation requires commitment to proper tools, training and infrastructure, quite often management seem to read about it in the inflight magazine ;-)
need to focus more on proper software engineering, while current product is still OK the future is in big data and large scale computing which are beyond standard knowledge for earthquake engineers

    Advice to Management

Implement objective decision-making; being lean is not equal to decide chaotically
Remove incompetent managers by objectively evaluating clients/employees/peers feedback
