I worked at Riskspan part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great work environment, positive people, flexible hours, applicable skills

    Cons

Mostly desk work, assignments can be drawn-out

    Advice to Management

Better explaining the reasons for certain assignments would increase employee's understanding and allow them to complete them better

    Pros

A lot of finance related companies limit your opportunities to do technical and analytical work based on your resume.I joined RiskSpan without a phD or financial modeling background but turned myself into a modeler by taking initiative and learning on the job. If you want to learn modeling and analytics, RiskSpan will provide you both the colleagues to teach you and the opportunities to learn.

Many firms have a strict hierarchy of who presents in meetings with clients. At RiskSpan, if you are the expert, you present to the client. We had a guy who was presenting to senior executives from an S&P 500 firm 6 months after he graduated from college.

If you have an idea, you can run with it. On multiple occasions, I was able to take time off from billable work to develop modeling products and write papers. These opportunities were given to others as well. This is very unusual compared to bigger firms I've worked at, where those opportunities seem reserved for the official research crew.

    Other pros:
    Fun office vibe.
    Nice People.
Lots of model validation work gives deep and meaningful exposure to wide array of asset classes, business segments and modeling approaches.
If you are not a travel project, there's pretty good flexibility with office time (ie, face time isn't a must).
Very responsive and competent technical staff who run the company's proprietary Risk platforms.

    Cons

Tysons corner rush hour traffic is terrible.

Model Validation work can sometimes be a check the box exercise for clients so they may not be fully engaged (this is common across all the consulting companies though).

Some people have been put on long term client projects without a big Riskspan team. This can be positive as you form a deep relationship with the client and this usually indicates you're doing a good job. But at the same time you can feel isolated from your colleagues. I think management has been trying more proactively to rotate people and generally is pretty responsive to requests to diversify the types of engagements, but like any consulting company, this depends on the pipeline and whether the bench can backfill.

    Advice to Management

More all staff meetings to keep teams informed of pipeline and updated on strategic initiatives.

"Growing and Great Place to Work"

    Pros

In the last year, RiskSpan has decided to make a major investment in growth in the financial technology SAAS space where we have a pretty unique expertise, and it feels exciting! RiskSpan is an amazing place to work, with extremely smart, good people. The company is hiring fast, and we are all taking on more responsibility. With such a good group of people, it's a great place for personal and professional growth. I'd say if you want to see the product of your work in real time, while also having a top-notch work life balance, this is a place for you.

    Cons

Because we are in a new growth phase, everyone's taking on more responsibility and initiative, identifying new approaches or creating new processes. Realistically, that's not quite the right environment for all people. Kind of a startup vibe with the offices and perks that entails versus larger companies, but we are financially stable with what I gather is a long term investor commitment.
The company still has work to do to get the word out into the market, but is making progress there.

    Advice to Management

The new direction at the intersection of technology and the financial industry is a great opportunity. Keep growing the team with good people and working through the growing pains.

I have been working at Riskspan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Small firm led by excellent management. Great opportunity to work with intelligent, hard-working people on a variety of projects. It's up to the individual to progress; if one does well, it will be acknowledged.

    Cons

Not always working on a project that you want to, but this is also true for many other consulting firms. Hours are often put in after hours and on weekends.

    Advice to Management

As the firm grows, please do not lose the excellent upper management staff. I believe the original team would help preserve RiskSpan's core values and culture. The opportunity to work directly with managers, directors, as well as MDs really help the analysts learn and grow faster.

    Pros

The employees and management foster an open work environment and develop your skills from the ground up. They are constantly active at expanding their network, meeting customer needs, and developing quality services. Very intelligent community thats works very well together starting from the top.

They allow you the freedom to use your bright ideas and give you ample opportunities to implement in the job from the start. As a young employee they quickly brought me up to speed and allowed me to help grow the company.

    Great work environment: no burnout.
    Flexible hours.
    Friendly and involved upper management.

    Cons

Be used to ambiguity (this can be positive). Company in the growth phase. Must be vigilant and motivated to succeed.

    Advice to Management

Keep expanding the team. Don't let employees get bogged down with work. Maintain great culture as company grows.

    Pros

The people you work with and the amount of exposure you get to clients. If you have a good idea and are willing to execute on it, management will let you run with it. High performers are rewarded for their contribution, and performance metrics are pretty transparent.

    Cons

Like at all consulting companies, the client comes first - so sometimes that means long hours, and extensive travel.

    Advice to Management

Continue to maintain the strong culture, even as the company grows.

    I worked at Riskspan full-time

    Pros

The company can be accommodating in tele-work and working remotely. So long as things get done, it often does not matter if you're on-site.

    Cons

Incompetent management. The company does not know how to handle its growth, its clients, or its employees. Impractical decisions are often made by those managers with limited client involvement.

I do not believe this company will be able to grow with its emphasis on contract employees. There is little room for advancement, and little "skin in the game" for employees to go above and beyond their contract terms.

Few opportunities for your job skills to be transferable. Furthermore, RiskSpan is not a well-known company, so exit opportunities are scarce.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to take on new clients and projects when you can't afford to invest in new employees. People are spread thin enough already.
