I worked at Ritchie Bros. full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Being in the construction industry.

    Cons

They've gone from a family-type business to the prototypical "Wall Street or bust", make extra money off the backs of every hard working contractor and individual possible - Do NOT concentrate on customer service any longer, you'd better concentrate on supervisor service. They have corporate spies who love to build cases to get rid of employees who do not fit the "Canadian" style - The Dave Ritchie way has died and been buried.

    Advice to Management

    Quit. You're doing it wrong.

    Pros

Historically the Leader in Heavy Equipment Consignments / Auctions.

There are some great folks in local operations that work hard to execute successful auction events.

At the time I was employed Territory Managers were viewed as a value add asset.

Best business model in the industry for Live/On site Auctions

    Cons

When you read the reviews that highlight how bad local / middle sales management is DO NOT discount these statements. When you read how the salaries are well below market values DO NOT discount these statements. When you read that there is a culture that encourages nepotism / favoritism by local sales management DO NOT discount these statements. When you see how many open territory sales manager jobs there are listed at the RBA website and on job boards it is because the current culture and local sales management have driven away talented sales professionals. It is not because they are adding to the existing sales force. The current CEO is applying his retail mentality of making the employees cover more accounts with less resources. The company no longer views the employees as their biggest asset and sets them aside in the interest of shareholder satisfaction.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes to the reality in front of you, the exodus of employees is not because they were "bad hires" Your culture encourages people to look for other opportunities.

I worked at Ritchie Bros. (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers, endless opportunities in the market, decent benifits, company car, other than auction time plenty of free time

    Cons

Compensation well below market, upper management either legacy guys with out current business understanding or Canadian yes men who don't have abilities to lead or sell. New CEO has driven away all dedicated staff leaving only incompetence. Compensation plan has more deduction from bonus than additions.

    Advice to Management

Look closely at your self worth, understand and decrease your operation expenses, remember how the company grew then try to replicate. If you can not help, get out of the way.

    Pros

Learned a lot, met some great people. The company as a whole has great benefits and great standards.

    Cons

The local office in Lincoln, NE is not well managed. The managers are more concerned with egos than with doing what is right for the company. They manage to twist well-meaning policies in a way that holds back the employees. There is very little room to grow within the organization. Raises are lousy and quality of life stinks. Managers treat employees more like children. Initially, the staff was fantastic, but the company ran most of the people off because they seemed to be more interested in hiring less-qualified people and churning through them in order to keep costs down. It's downright exhausting!

    Advice to Management

Treat the local employees like they matter. I think they forget that there are some great employees that really do 'bleed orange' but they aren't appreciated or rewarded for their efforts.

I have been working at Ritchie Bros. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are some great people that work for The company.

    Cons

With being A world wide multi-million dollar company, the benefits aren't that great. Your opinion does not matter in the U.S. Head Office. The Managers don't get a long. They do not work with parents/single parents well and do not understand the needs of a parent of a child who has a disability. Salary for such a large company is very low. Head Office can't keep new employees very long. If you're not in Sales you're over looked. Sales gets bonuses 3 times a year, everyone else gets a "Turkey Bonus" of $100, after tax its less than $90.

    Advice to Management

    Value your employees.

"A company looking to hire cheap labor."

    Pros

The company offers outstanding healthcare, comparable to that of Canadian healthcare. The office is located in a beautiful building with comfortable offices and offers a great work/life balance attitude.

    Cons

The company's salaries are far below market standard. They value their healthcare packages at over $10K and therefore reduce your salary by such. As the world's largest auction company with sales in the billions, employee bonuses are less that 100 dollars per year. No possibility for job growth, less than 6 managers within corporate for the entire United States division.

    Advice to Management

For a company to grow in the right direction it must be lead by people who are passionate about their work, people who are skilled in recognizing inefficiencies and eager to develop upon that. For far too long Ritchie Bros as worked to obtain "cheap labor," this attitude has lead to much of the demise that the company currently sits. For an international, publicly traded incorporation to hire applicants with only a GED or associates degree to foster operations in the billions displays an obvious disregard for growth in the "right direction." It's no wonder employee turnover is so high, why over 80% of employees are over 30, and why hired college graduates only stay [on average] less than two years.

Reconsider the type of employee that you're looking to attract, and then build your human resources and benefits policies around that desired individual. Great companies not only have employees work for them but work for their employees as well.

I worked at Ritchie Bros. full-time

    Pros

The stock price had been going up recently

    Cons

The best days are in the past. The company has become just another share holder value company where the average employee is a number not a name. I would not recommend anyone working for this new company that does not epitomize the values that Dave instilled in so many employees and what made the company so great.

    Ritchie Bros. Response

Thank you for taking the time to express your thoughts. Shareholder value is often perceived negative, based on financial mumbo-jumbo driven by Wall Street. We see it as much more than that... More
