I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time

    Pros

One of the best companies I have ever worked for. The culture at Riverbed is one of a kind. Everyone of us that are in the trenches works for the team and helps each other. You don't ever hear "that's not my job". I am really proud to work for this company and beside some amazingly talented people. Our products are amazing...and keep getting even better. The commitment to customer service at Riverbed is second to none.

    Cons

I agree with the prior reviews about hiring. We are a great company with an amazing culture. Don't hire just to fill a position. We are a highly desired place to work and we can attract the best. One bad apple can ruin a team if we are not careful.

    Advice to Management

Keep on being great, Rob, Paul and the rest of upper management!

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice office and good team. Great benefits. In particular, real PTO time (120 hrs/year, increasing to 144 after yr. 4) not the fuzzy "unlimited vacation" that is never used up and always discouraged. Solid work environment overall.

    Cons

The company is private again with no IPO in sight, so no stock incentives.
Openly drifting out of the US, with Bangalore office growing and others slowly shrinking between occasional layoffs and not replacing those who leave on their own. Turf wars, intraoffice politics, and management competition got in the way once in a while but I hear it's even worse elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

The company actually seems on the right path. Pre-mid-2018 there was a feel that the company was stalling big time, but it seems to be leveling up.

    Pros

    * Great people, work environment, benefits
    * Interesting technology

    Cons

    * Many of the documentation and other processes were very antiquated. Who uses unstructured FrameMaker anymore?
    * Things really went downhill when Thoma Bravo took the company private.

    Pros

-Flexibility in schedule (depending on manager)
    -Competitive pay and benefits
    -Stocked kitchens
    -Cell phone reimbursement

    Cons

    -Silos silos silos
-Too many decision-makers = delayed decisions or NO decisions
-The bad apples (egos) are often rewarded / genuine contributors, collaborative team players feel underappreciated or undervalued

    Advice to Management

TRUST the professionals you hire to make informed decisions - no need to micromanage - you hire well - now TRUST your talent. Focus on matters that truly pertain to your level of influence, leave the rest to your team - and give them opportunities to shine

I worked at Riverbed Technology full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Although it sounds like there have been worrying developments at Riverbed since I worked there in 2014, back then this place was the best possible scenario for a giant Fortune 500 company. Like the anti-Oracle. Efficient, great corporate culture, friendly to remote workers. The salary, and especially benefits, were well beyond industry standards.

Everything from my interview (very practical and focused on real-world problems) to my last day was done in a friendly, practical, professional and honest way.

We had a parting of ways—the blame being entirely on my side—so my bias should be the other way, but these folks were 100% great.

    Cons

Any big company comes with a slightly sterile, corporate-y vibe, but Riverbed had the least of that I've ever seen.

Some of the newer reviews indicate experiences that weren't as positive as mine, so it's possible that the culture is very different between offices or has changed since I was there in 2014.

    Advice to Management

Try to maintain the great culture I experienced in 2014 despite the inevitable pressures on big companies.

I worked at Riverbed Technology full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, decent 401K, good personal enrichment classes.

    Cons

    • Engineering department is male-centric with very few women holding any management positions.
    • Women are not heard, are interrupted, and generally treated as inferior. I've been mansplained about subjects I know and told that I'm bothering them when asking clarification.
    • There is no recourse when dealing with senior male management, HR would rather write it off than deal with the underlying issues.
    • Required furlough vacation, employees must use 6 days of their vacation to take off during Riverbed designated holidays twice a year or go unpaid.

    Advice to Management

I've struggled with speaking up, but have decided that in this day and age, enough is enough and a light needs to be shed on working as a woman in engineering at Riverbed. Educate the men to treat their female co-workers with the same respect and intelligence as their male counterparts. Stop colluding with male senior management to undermine the positions women hold. Hire more women to work in senior management positions.
