    Pros

    It was good before privatization!

    Cons

All is lost now. Almost all the wonderful people quit after it became private. Almost everyone in the company are now new hires. Riverbed used to be know for its people, now its a mess. No stocks/options. The work is terrible. Managers and upper management could not care less. Managers do not have an even little technical knowledge. Talking to them is like talking to HR. Hard workers are not rewarded nor heard. People are least motivated. They have lost market share and competitors are doing much better. The list goes on.

I worked at Riverbed Technology full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None. The internal recruiter should retire. He is stuck in the 80's. They put processes in place not to hire quality individuals, based on outdated processes that have no merit. They use a program that some recruiter put in place that justifies his job.

    Cons

Too many to list. Run! The communication level the respect or lack there of does not exist. This is a company you did not want to work for

    Advice to Management

    Get real with yourself.

    Pros

Innovative Technology and building new products from ground up is exciting.

    Cons

Politics in play! If you are not into politics you will not come out winning. Upper Management heavily believes in the concept of "perception", and the reality of matter does not carry value. No matter how great or wonderful your contribution is, it can easily be pushed aside & overlooked.

    Experiencing harassment and torture!

    Advice to Management

Learn to appreciate the contributions of your employees. Be open minded! And not act like you know-it-all. Sitting on your high chair up above sure gives you a bird's eye view, but remember that it is indeed a bird's eye view only. Perception and Reality can differ a lot, and don't make decisions based from your view up there.

Most importantly, do NOT torture your employees.

Implementation of burdensome rules and procedures.
Lack of respect for employees, no transparency and lack of trust of management going all the way to the VP level.

    Pros

Managers are so preoccupied with their own job searches, it's easy to just slack off most days.

    Cons

IT Department is being run by a suckup left by a CIO that used to rap at her staff meetings. Yes, she would rap and lead staff in some motivational song she enjoyed torturing everyone with. She hired all her buddies from that company (Taos) and then contracted out over a million dollars in IT project work to her best friend. Yeah, that's the type of company Riverbed is now. Everybody is just there to make money for themselves and their friends. Run away if you get asked to interview at this shell of a company!!!

    Advice to Management

It's pointless to even offer any advice.....

I worked at Riverbed Technology (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Free snacks
Little oversight means lots of flexibility, responsibility, and autonomy.

    Cons

Employees lack energy, excitement, and vitality
    No opportunity to switch teams
Layoffs did not seem to affect management, creating a culture of over-managing a few engineers.
LIttle oversight means no real feedback about your performance.

    Advice to Management

You spend all day in meetings, delegate too much work for too few engineers, and generally try too hard to justify your positions. Given the recent layoffs, and the lack of direct contributors, you need to actually make direct contributions to the products. If you want to fix the morale problems within the company, please consider stepping down from your positions and helping out the people actually building the products. Working directly with the people you manage would mean you're actually qualified to judge their performance.

    Pros

Great people, great technology, great place to learn...

    Cons

The Opnet aquisition destroyed this company - $1 Billion for $200mil in Revenue for a product that for the most part overlapped what Cascade was doing at the time. Additionally, they did not manage things well while integrating Opnet into the company. There was definitely a huge issue with the different cultures and ultimately RVBD lost most of their best people.

    Advice to Management

Since this is 3+ years after... What can I say at this point?

    Pros

Has potential to remain a wonderful group of bright individuals and there are people who care. May get the tools needed to succeed.

    Cons

There WERE many great people but many have left in the last 90 days. IT Management just re-leveled positions downgrading employee titles but expecting the same senior level work. Imagine getting hired as a Sr. Engineer and then being told your job title is now "IT Support Analyst but we still need level 3 work from you".

    Advice to Management

Competitive market for employees. Rethink your plan as far as employee retention.
