I worked at Road Runner Sports part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Free shoes, some great coworkers, discounts, race reimbursement. Some department heads are amazing.

    Cons

Few great managers, lots of terrible ones. Awful managers are left to cause havoc for incredible lengths of time due to firing practices. HR not particularly useful.
Depending on department, little opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Yes you spend a lot of time and money training store managers- especially from the outside. But when it's obvious they are tearing everyone around them down and have mountains of HR complaints it's time to cut bait.

I worked at Road Runner Sports full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Promotions and bonuses were the best thing about this job. Management is probably the most understanding and accommodating I've ever seen. The job encourages healthy lifestyle choices and reimburses for races you run.

    Cons

I found the job to be very robotic. Everything is scripted. It made me feel like a shell of a person. I was genuinely helping customers but they way the company has you do it is almost sneaky. I felt like I couldn't be myself because there was always something script I had to keep to.

    Advice to Management

Less scripted more human. Customers need to feel like they are talking to a person not a walking billboard.

    Pros

Mike is nice, but is unaware of the cancer that has spread in his firm.

    Cons

Endless cons. The leaders of the company are there to protect their job and make themselves look better. They leech great ideas off of the team, because they have ZERO vision and innovation. Once they have a great idea, they proceed to take full credit for it. Don't take my word for it, I encourage you to ask around in their corporate offices or retail store management team...it has been a systemic problem for years now.

    Advice to Management

Fire all heads of state and start over. Mike, remove the buffer you have with your team created by your higher ups (anyone who has or is working their knows EXACTLY whom I am speaking about) and you will see how cancerous of an environment you have right now.

I have been working at Road Runner Sports part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Laid back fun atmosphere. Great discounts. Free shoes. Fun tech sessions. Feel appreciated always.

    Cons

Bonus structure changes often. Hours can get cut sometimes. Co workers should remain co workers only

    Advice to Management

If people complain about things tell them to get a Job somewhere else. It's your choice to work somewhere if you don't like it leave. Simple.

I worked at Road Runner Sports full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    * Free Shoes (Not As Often As The Past Though)
    * Solid Coworkers

    Cons

    * Regional/Area Management Does Not Promote From Within
    * Corporate "Robot" Culture and Unreliable System
    * Fear of Retribution for Simply Trying to Make Company Better Via Constructive Criticism
    * Willingness to Sweep Things Under The Rug
    * Your mental health will deteriorate.

    Advice to Management

Get new area managers who will promote the hard working employees and retain talent...Several stores are losing excellent teams because of the culture, benefits, and work-life balance getting worse.

Road Runner Sports was a great place to work in years past, but it just keeps going downhill. Let your employees work and relate to customers and be authentic. It is getting too "robotic" and is toxic.

Also, get more help and quit under-staffing; this stresses your employees, and drives them to resign.

I have been working at Road Runner Sports full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The products, the focus on the Customer experience, great people to work with, the positive impact on the community, give back programs such as Athlete's Helping Athletes.

    Cons

The expectations on output aren't supported with proper resources - time, tools, leadership support. Raises, when given (which are few and far between) are a joke and not in line with performance.

    Advice to Management

There is a serious lack of engagement with the general population of employees. Implement a satisfaction survey, collect and analyze the data and take action.

I worked at Road Runner Sports part-time

    Pros

Free shoes, free clothing, early access to new products

    Cons

It was a tough job to have for it only being retail. Customers are very particular and picky when it comes to their feet. The company itself is okay, nothing special. Some perks got taken away as the years went by and never received a raise at any point.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees.

I worked at Road Runner Sports part-time

    Pros

-your coworkers (you will come to rely on these people to vent about your management... more than likely they're feeling the same way)
    -the discount
    -race reimbursement

    Cons

-very little work / life balance (unless you're a manager)
    -low morale
-constantly forced to upsell which comes off as pushy

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting these people who wouldn't be in store management positions at any other company. Give store managers a few HR lessons on what they can / cannot say to their employees. It took finally leaving for me to realize how toxic some of the store managers are.

The CEO is very out of touch with what is going on in his stores.

I worked at Road Runner Sports part-time

    Pros

Everyone has the same goals, people are friendly, knowledgable and supportive

    Cons

its all sales based so you must incorporate sales tactics into your regular conversations with customers, otherwise your management will ask you why you didn't try to upscale your customer.

    Advice to Management

You shouldn't have to bombard customers that come into the door, let them look around for a little bit before you ask them 21 questions.
