I worked at Rochdale Investment Management full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The hours are incredibly easy. For a private wealth firm, I'm amazed that portfolio managers and portfolio management associates start as late as 9am. Most are out the door by 6pm. No one on the Street starts this late unless they are leaving work later in the day.
The people are by and large nice and easy to work with, with a couple of exceptions

    Cons

Very few resources devoted to training and cultivating talent. It's really up to the person to do what they can to advance/manage their career. It also depends who you report to and how engaged/interested the senior manager is in developing talent and keeping them engaged
    Micromanagement can be an issue
Management doesn't value staff in the monetary sense of the term either. Tasks and responsibilities are broken down into an assembly line approach, giving me a poor impression of how personal service and possibly be provided in such an environment
Not enough resources put into IT systems. They have a lot to catch up on in terms of technology. Realistically, trades could not be executed until at least half an hour into the trading day because the systems could not be updated for the prior day's prices before the market open.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time and resources on talent. Hiring over-qualified people can also be an issue. You are better served with younger talent that you can groom to your liking.
Hire some consultants to implement your IT upgrades for a change. Not enough resources are being put behind technology to better serve your clients

I worked at Rochdale Investment Management as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Rochdale has a small firm feel, a lot of interaction with upper management, and very friendly coworkers. As an intern right out of high school, it was a great introduction to investment management and working in New York.

    Cons

There weren't too many downsides to working at Rochdale. I enjoyed every moment of it, so I couldn't really speak poorly of my experience.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work!

    Pros

At least Rochdale is buy-side, although the pay and benefits were not comparable to other buy-sde shops. It's a good entry and stepping stone to move on within buy-side.

    Cons

Career growth was minimal, which was witnessed by the attrition at the junior level. If you stayed, your salary and role were more likely to stay where you started when you joined the firm. There is very little upward mobility because everyone who started the firm has stayed and increased their pay as the company grows. But the junior level people who are hired to do the day-to-day functions are kept at the same pay scale. There is no where for them to grow or move to, so they leave the firm. So it's a continual hiring process at the lower levels of the firm.

The pay and benefits, like vacation, health care coverage, employee benefits for education or gym membership, are much better on the sell-side.
